Title: Smart Grid News : Future of electric power: Net zero homes get a step closer
Post by: juan on April 23, 2013, 07:13:56 PM
Apr 23, 2013

Quick Take: The idea of net zero homes -- homes that produce as much power as they use -- has been around for a while. But they have always suffered from the difficulty of matching the load profile to the generation profile. At most homes, much of the load occurs early in the morning and then again in the evening, when people are home from work. Meanwhile, generation from the home's solar panels is often highest in the middle of the day.

Solving this mismatch requires energy storage, and that's too expensive. But wait a minute. What if you already had a stack of batteries sitting out in your garage? What if your electric vehicles (EV) could store that solar electricity for you? Sure, you'd use some of it to run the car back and forth to the store. But you could also use those batteries to store energy for use by the house.

Recently I stopped by to warn about the scary future posited by Walmart's future energy plans. Now I urge you to think what might happen if, let's say 10 years from now, a substantial number of homeowners have solar panels and EVs. First, they'll need to buy far less power from their utilities. Second, they'll be able to time shift, so the power they do buy is at low time-of-use rates. -- Jesse Berst

Ford Motor Company and KB Home just announced that products from the Ford-led initiative MyEnergi Lifestyle will be featured in the homebuilder's ZeroHouse 2.0 model home in San Marcos, Calif
.
The collaboration is intended to raise awareness of MyEnergi Lifestyle benefits and provide a showcase for EVs, solar power systems and smart appliances. The companies say the initiative will demonstrate how the typical American family can potentially save money while reducing their impact on the environment by combining a highly efficient home design with the latest in smart home technology and an affordable plug-in hybrid vehicle.
.
The idea is to leverage technology so key energy-consuming devices in a home use less energy, while also shifting energy usage to less expensive periods. At night, for example, when energy costs are lower, a smart refrigerator can perform high-energy tasks like ice making or defrosting – just as Ford's plug-in vehicles do with recharging.
.
ZeroHouse 2.0 continues a national rollout of the net-zero energy home options KB Home began in the fall of 2011. But the San Marcos house pushes the envelope even more, the companies suggest in a press release. For example:
•         It's the first WaterSense-labeled home built in San Diego County, designed to use 20% less water than a typical new home
•         It includes a comprehensive Schneider Electric Wiser Home Management System that allows homeowners to monitor energy consumption and provides automation control via a web-based portal or mobile app
•         It features all-new Whirlpool smart appliances that incorporate Whirlpool 6th Sense Live technology; homeowners can monitor and program their appliances through wireless networks

Smart grid win pile-on: Lots of deals (plus milestones, honors and finance wins too)

Apr 26, 2013

PROJECT WINS

•         National Instruments is partnering with Prolucid LocalGrid Technologies to build the next-generation energy management system for Toronto Hydro, Canada's largest municipal electric utility. Funded by nearly $2.5 million in grants from Canada's ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative and Ontario's Smart Grid Fund, the project takes advantage of distributed intelligence technology to manage renewable energy generated by the community onto the power grid. In addition to allowing for increased generation capacity, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the companies say the integrated platform can improve reliability and efficiency across the electric power system.

•         Silver Spring Networks entered into an agreement with Masers Energy Malaysia to help bring smart infrastructure benefits to Malaysia. Under the agreement, Silver Spring Networks will coordinate smart infrastructure technology, planning and services for Masers’ Smart Grid City Melaka and Special Economic Zone Melaka projects. “We are excited to partner with Silver Spring Networks as we build a modern, 21st century infrastructure to help accelerate economic growth and deliver innovative smart city services for Malaysia’s citizens,” said Dato’ Seri Suhaimi Abd Rahman, CEO at Masers Energy.

•         Aclara Technologies announced that Indiana's Anderson Municipal Light and Power will implement its TWACS power-line communications system. The utility will use the system to reduce costs and improve service to the almost 60,000 residents of Anderson, Ind., a city about 25 miles northeast of Indianapolis. The TWACS AMI upgrade being implemented allows customers to track electric consumption, helping them identify and cut back on expensive areas of usage. Anderson Mayor Kevin S. Smith said that "an additional benefit from TWACS is that the utility eventually could institute prepay systems with no additional fees, giving customers more choice in determining how their electricity is delivered.”

•         Oracle has been selected by Latvenergo AS, Latvia’s largest energy supplier, to help it enhance customer service as it prepares to meet the challenges of a newly deregulated energy market. As part of the agreement, Oracle Utilities will provide Latvenergo with an integrated solution comprising its customer care and billing, customer self-service and business intelligence offerings. "As energy markets in the Baltics deregulate, the ability to offer competitive differentiation through top-notch customer service becomes vital," noted Rodger Smith, Oracle senior vice president and general manager.

•         Milsoft Utility Solutions reports that the Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative in Talladega, Alabama has chosen its GIS and field engineering solutions. “As the demands on our electric distribution system become not only greater but more complex, we must have an accurate, detailed computer model and facilities data base,” said Manager of Engineering Ryan Hart, “Milsoft GIS and FE will enable us to do both.” Coosa Valley EC provides electric energy to more than 16,000 customers in rural East Central Alabama.

•         Acclaim Energy Advisors, which provides energy management solutions, announced a six- year strategic agreement with the Texas General Land Office to provide DLO365sm Powered by AT&T to government agencies and facilities. Acclaim says the offering will reduce utility costs, protect sensitive equipment from power surges, help restore reliability to the Texas power grid and generate revenue for participating government agencies. "We're famous for our weather extremes here in Texas -- it may be freezing in the Panhandle while we're wearing shorts on our sunny coastline," said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson. "That means our grid has to be ready for frequent and sometimes unpredictable peaks in demand. So we're particularly excited about Acclaim's new technology by helping to protect the Texas electric grid and drive revenue for participants."

•         Survalent Technology has commissioned a new SCADA system for Jackson Purchase Energy Corporation in Kentucky, which is a not-for-profit electric cooperative serving the electrical requirements for their members since 1937. They are a member of Big Rivers Electric Corporation. “Jackson Purchase has implemented many of our smart grid applications," noted Survalent Sales VP Steve Strauss. "They are one of a growing number of Survalent users who are using end-of-line voltage from their AMI system to maximize voltage reduction during demand response periods and at the same time assure their customers are within voltage limit standards.”

By Fiel Angeli E. Araoarao – Gabin

Her guiding principle: “Life is what we make it. Not the golden rule, but it’s what my parents used to tell me, and this line has always been my inspiration, so as not to bargain better for good, nor settle with better if I could have the best. Ambitions are for free and the sky is the limit. Nothing comes from nothing. We have to set our goals and give our best to achieve them. We shouldn’t forget to wrap all our efforts with prayers because it is He who ultimately makes things happen.”

She was the pretty, lithe, fair-complexioned (must I say naïve? or demure?) young lady when Sir Oscar B. Real, Ma’am Minnie Villamor - del Rosario, Bohol National High School (BNHS) faculty members, and myself were the judges in the elimination round of the Miss Alturas Campus Personality held at the residence of Sir Marlito Uy (Alturas Group of Companies’ general manager) in Booy way back 1992. Vanessa Joyce “Bambi” Matuod Evardone, the fifth child (in the brood of seven) of Francisco M. Evardone, retired DILG Provincial Director, and Hospicia C. Matuod, who’s Master Teacher II and OIC-school principal of Manga Elementary School, is indisputably one of the pride of Manga District, Tagbilaran and the entire province, as well. How she  “gracefully” made her way to the ladder of success is truly inspiring, something worthy of emulation, but for sure, nobody can measure up to her feat. Well, not in the next 25 or 50 years, I believe.

Let’s start with her highly - impressive scholastic background. She was class salutatorian of Manga Elementary School in 1990. Her secondary education at BNHS was a major contributing factor to her long list of achievements. Bambi was class spelling bee and received the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Award in 1990. In 1994, she was class valedictorian of BNHS and recipient of the Duty Medal Award, Philippine Insular Life Award and Philippine Senate Award.

She earned her degree in Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology at Southwestern University (SWU) in 1998, magna cum laude, was conferred the Most Outstanding Graduate of SWU citation and another special award for garnering the highest grade point average (GPA) of the entire graduating class of 1998. From 1994 to 1998, she was consistently No. 1 in the dean’s list, a member of the team that grabbed the championship plum of the Junior Chemical Society Quizbowl in 1995. Her leadership potentials were harnessed and recognized when she was elected president of the Medtech interns in 1998 and vice-president of the Cebu Blood Donors’ Society (1997-98). Her diligence and focus on her studies paid off as she was university scholar from 1998 to 2002, always occupying the top spot (No. 1) in the dean’s list and was cited as most outstanding in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, all nerve-wracking and mind-boggling subjects dreaded by most students. In the inter-medical school quizbowl (2000) sponsored by the Cebu Medical Society, Inc., her team bagged the championship trophy. She was also trusted with money matters as class treasurer from 1999 to 2002.

The next step towards success led her to Matias H. Aznar Memorial College of Medicine (MHAMCM)–SWU for medicine proper where she was able to avail of an academic scholarship from the Bisaya Medical Association of USA based in Florida; graduated cum laude and first (Top 1) in the College of Medicine graduating class 2002. Among her other awards were the SWU Academic Excellence Award, Most Outstanding in Pediatrics and Most Outstanding in Ophthalmology. She was granted post-graduate internship (PGI) at the University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital, but chose to serve as PGI at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), formerly Southern Islands Hospital in Cebu City and earned the citation Most Outstanding PGI (MOP) – Batch 2003. She passed the qualifying exam for residency training (QERT) administered by the Department of Health (DOH) in July 2003, then the United States medical licensure exams (USMLE) – Step 1 in December 2003 and Step 2 in March of this year. Not only that. In April 2004, she was second placer (national ranking) in the career professional examinations given by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and 14th placer in the Philippine licensure examination for physicians in August of 2004. Beat that?

The hardest part in medical school? The exams, she quipped. As it was just like in high school when students were in block sections. She told me that she gained more insights from friends who were mature enough to be cool, yet still have some childish stunts slipping in between. In medical school, there’s time to be serious and time to play. While studying in Cebu, Bambi, her brother Doydee and her sister Wowie did the laundry and cooked meals, as they were taught at home. Though some of her classmates found it rather incredible, internship was physically overwhelming as expected. Imagine 32 hours hospital duty, 48 hours even! They say “sleeping is a luxury in medicine.”  It’s true, but then people studying medicine belong to the age bracket who won’t need growth hormones (from sleep) because the growing process has long ceased (quite interesting). Her secret in school: “Intelligence plus diligence wrapped in prayers.”

Beauty and brains seldom go together. But in the case of Bambi, she is one of the rare species who is so fortunate to have the best of worlds. Her first beauty title was BNHS Binibining Agham, followed by the Binibining Agham – Bohol, which later paved the way to her winning the Region VII Binibining Agham ’92, Miss Alturas Campus Personality ’92, Mutya sa Tagbilaran ’94; Miss Bohol Sandugo ’94; Miss Medical Technology and Miss Southwestern University “96, SWU Golden Jubilee Queen and San Miguel Corporation (Mandaue) Muse ’97.

Having harmony is the family is very important to the Evardones. They also share in the success of each family member. The eldest is Mae Joy (my classmate for four years at BNHS), a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) graduate of then Divine Word College, the first nurse in the family, who is now in the dialysis unit of University of Connecticut, married to Engr. Daniel Curtis Falk. Jose Voltaire “Boyteh,” DWC graduate, nurse at the emergency care unit of Yale University Medical Center, also in Connecticut, living with wife Elma Ruaya, a physical therapist from Tagbilaran. Mutya sa Tagbilaran ’91 and Miss Bohol Sandugo ’91 second runner-up Joanna Cheryl “Chewee,” is 17th placer in the nurses’ licensure examination in May 1994 and now working as a nurse in the intensive coronary care unit in the same hospital with Boyteh.  Janice Michelle “Wowie,” Mutya sa Tagbilaran ’96 second runner-up, SWU-Miss Physical Therapy ’95 and Miss Volare ’93, turned out to be a licensed physical therapist who’s a university scholar all through her PT days, continued to be in medical school and graduated as No. 1 of her class and is now a physician connected with the Medical Mission Group Cooperative Hospital. Jose Socrates “Doydee” recently finished post-graduate medical internship at Cebu Doctors’ Hospital, but spent his medtech and medical courses at SWU and in year 2000 got an award for academic excellence as university scholar. He is bracing himself for the Philippine licensure exams for physicians. The youngest is Justin Francis “Jopet”, in his fifth and final year in architecture at the University of Bohol (UB), the only artist in the family especially gifted in the field of pens and figures.

Bambi happily recounts sweet memories of her childhood. There’s a two-year gap between each sibling, so they could divide into two (2) teams already to play “salangkati”(?) without having to import additional players and the choir’s complete during Christmas when they would go caroling. They shared the household chores; they took turns in washing the dishes and cooking rice. She still remembers there was a clipboard attached to a bulletin board so it was easier to check whose turn it was. There were also sweeping assignments. Bambi, who belonged to the younger half of the family, swept the kitchen, while the older siblings had bigger parts to clean proportionately. Since their mother had her hands full with schoolwork, the older siblings taught the younger ones how to do math and how to deal with grammar. When both parents would go to Cebu for something on particular occasions, everybody will then be excited because each of them would get a coloring and rhyme book as “pasalubong.”

As Bambi had shared, her parents’ upbringing and methods of discipline were varied: whipping with one (1) or two (2) coconut midribs, rubber sandals (chinelas), leather belts, “lusi” (pinched especially over the inguinal area) or just sleep-inducing litany (I experienced all of that, too!).  As kids, they were not allowed too much television – TV viewing was only one hour a day, from six (6) to seven (7) in the evening during school days, and limited only to Newswatch, instead of Mickey Mouse and other cartoons.  Would you believe their childhood TV idols were Harry Gasser and Cathy Santillan-Veloso, newscasters of RPN-9? A constant reminder was posted in bold letters near the TV which says: “NO TELEVIEWING AFTER 7PM. TV IS ONLY GOOD FOR NEWS WATCHING. IF YOU HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO, READ. IF YOU’RE DONE STUDYING, SLEEP.

This brilliant and charming lady physician met Dr. Carlito B. Astillero II, the love of her life, in medical school, while she was in her first year and he, in third year. According to her, it was his (future husband’s) close friend who courted her. This writer hadn’t a chance to ask what exactly transpired, but Carlito started courting Bambi during her third year. As she wasn’t the type to give up her pursuit for academic supremacy even under threat of macho stare, Bambi turned him down twice, but Carlito’s persistence must have smitten this beauty queen from Manga who finally opened her heart (for a one-on-one relationship) during her fourth year – internship – when she didn’t have to worry a lot about grades… Not many people know that Bambi and Carlito permanently sealed their union last April 11, 2005 at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph the Worker. By the last week of November, Carlito, after his three and a half-year residency training in general surgery at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, will leave for the United States to join Bambi, now on her first-year residency training in internal medicine at the Caritas Carney Hospital-Tafts University in Boston, Massachusetts and will hopefully specialize in nephrology or cardiology in the future…and up to now, her favorite line is still – “there’s no pillow so soft than a clear conscience.” How true!

(Fiel Angeli E. Araoarao – Gabin)

M&A & FINANCING WINS

•         GridCOM Technologies based in San Diego, California says it has secured seed funding from Ellis Energy Investments to develop its "future-proof"

quantum encryption solution that protects vulnerable communications between millions of automation devices currently controlling the electrical grid. "Correcting the blatant vulnerabilities of the nation's electrical grid is a responsibility we can no longer shirk," said Dr. Duncan Earl, Chief Technology Officer at GridCOM and former R&D staff member with the Cyberspace Sciences and Information Intelligence Research group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. "This investment ensures that one of our best cyber security tools, quantum encryption, will be developed and offered as a commercial alternative for the very near future."

•        ABB announced it will acquire Camarillo, CA-based Power-One, which provides renewable energy and energy efficient power conversion and power management solutions, for $6.35 per share in cash or $1,028 million equity value. ABB says the transaction would position it as a leading global supplier of solar inverters – the “intelligence” behind a solar PV system – to a market forecasted by the International Energy Agency to grow by more than 10 percent per year until 2021. “Solar PV is becoming a major force reshaping the future energy mix because it is rapidly closing in on grid parity,” said ABB CEO Joe Hogan. “Power-One is a well-managed company and is highly regarded as a technology innovator focusing on the most attractive and intelligent solar PV product."

MILESTONES & HONORS

•         Silver Spring Networks earlier this week joined representatives of Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), General Electric, and the U.S. Department of Energy in a ceremony to celebrate the success of FPL’s pioneering ‘Energy Smart Florida’ initiative and to demonstrate the benefits of advanced smart grid networks at FPL’s Performance and Diagnostic Center.  FPL was one of the first utilities to take a “network first” approach to grid modernization and proactively make the infrastructure investments that today enable greater energy efficiency and improved service reliability, while giving customers more control over the energy they use.  In the initial phase of the multi-year ‘Energy Smart Florida’ initiative, FPL and Silver Spring successfully connected more than 4.5 million FPL customers to the first smart grid network of its kind.

•         ABB has been recognized by MIT Technology Review for its hybrid high-voltage direct current breaker, placing it on MIT's list of the 10 most important technology milestones of the past year. The annual MIT list highlights the top 10 breakthrough technologies the editors believe will have the greatest impact on the shape of innovation in the years to come. “Since 2001, our editors have carefully selected the technologies poised to make the greatest impact on the shape of innovation in the years to come and the organizations leading the charge in those fields,” said MIT Technology Review’s Editor in Chief and Publisher, Jason Pontin. “ABB is helping to define the way we think about creating practical, high-voltage direct current circuit breakers.”

4 reports in 4 minutes: smart meters, smart grid financials, utility maturity and EV adoption

By Liz Enbysk

Should we be talking to consumers about smart homes instead of smart meters? That's what a new study out of the UK seems to suggest. Scroll down for a quick peek at that report and three more we think you'll find as interesting as we did.

Should we be talking about smart homes instead of smart meters?
The other day we told you about a smart meter showdown in the UK with Silver Spring Networks, Sensus and other companies vying for a piece of the $18.5 smart meter deployment that's supposed to begin next year. On the heels of that we thought the recent YouGov survey of 3,000 British consumers had some interesting results. For example, 63% of the respondents didn't know what a smart meter. However, when the concept was explained, respondents felt that greater visibility and control of energy usage in the home (77%) and the introduction of fair pricing via accurate billing (73%) were the top two reasons to favor a smart meter. And 60% felt that the idea of a ‘Home of the Future’ with a range of remote controllable gadgets and appliances putting the consumer in control, makes smart meters much more appealing. Like consumers most everywhere, the Brits do have some concerns about smart meters, according to the report. It highlights data privacy (59 percent), accuracy of billing (32 percent) and the installation process (28 percent) as the most important concerns that need to be addressed through any consumer engagement process.

VC smart grid investments are "ambling on with no clear direction"
That's the word from Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Capital Group who calls the Silver Spring Networks IPO the lone highlight in an otherwise slow first quarter of 2013. Mercom's snapshot of VC and M&A activity characterizes it as flat for the last five quarters, with Q1 of this year seeing $62 million in nine deals – nearly identical to Q1 of 2012. The top two VC deals last quarter each raised $15 million. Cylance, a provider of cyber security products for the infrastructure industry, raised $15 million from Khosla Ventures and Fairhaven Capital in a Series A round, and Sentient Energy, a developer of advanced grid monitoring solutions that consist of modular intelligent monitoring devices and software applications, raised $15 million in an undisclosed round from Foundation Capital. In terms of M&A activity, there were only four transactions in Q1; among them Toshiba's acquisition of Consert.

Which smart grid utilities lead the maturity curve?
A new report -- Utility Smart Grid Outlook in North America 2013: Technologies, Strategies & Case Studies -- from GTM Research analyzes deployments of 40 leading North American utilities and ranks them in terms of maturity and technology adoption trends. CenterPoint Energy tops the list, followed by Pacific Gas & Electric and San Diego Gas & Electric. Says Emma Ritch, report author and Senior Analyst at GTM Research: "By identifying and ranking utilities on the five most important components of a successful smart grid plan, it became evident where utilities are struggling and excelling. This report gives utilities across the globe a yardstick by which to set goals and measure the progress of their smart grid deployments, as well as providing vendors with key insights into utility projects to support product development and marketing and sales strategies."

Electrification of transportation is gaining traction
That's what the IEE says in a new white paper that maintains that under even the most conservative scenarios, more than five million EVs will be on the roads in the U.S. by 2035. But they're saying the figure could actually increase to as much as 30 million depending on advances in battery technology. AS Lisa Wood, IEE’s Executive Director and Vice President of the Edison Foundation, sees it: “Opportunities for electrification in the transportation sector are large and advanced batteries are a major driver.  Electric transportation makes economic and environmental sense. Approximately 90,000 Americans have said goodbye to the pump and hello to the plug due to battery advancements and a growing selection of car models that has made driving an EV more accessible than ever before. This number will only grow.” Related to that, Earth Techling points to a new Electric Vehicles Initiative report that has the U.S. leading the world in EV sales at the end of 2012 – but it's still a drop in the bucket compared to total passenger car sales.

$2.9B in smart grid investment yields $6.8B in economic output, DOE says

Apr 29, 2013

Quick Take: A new report from the Department of Energy (DOE) documents the economic gains from the stimulus funding. From the nearly $3 billion spent so far, the DOE claims economic benefits close to $7 billion plus nearly 50,000 high-quality jobs. The DOE, in other words, gives itself pretty high marks. How do you grade its stimulus efforts? – Jesse Berst
.
Judging from a DOE analysis of smart grid projects, spending on Smart Grid Investment
Grants and Smart Grid Demonstration Programs is more than paying off. As of March 2012, the $2.9 billion spent on projects has yielded a total economic output of $6.8 billion.

Also, the analysis indicated that high tech, industrial and service businesses usually involved in smart grid projects record higher than average labor income and boost job numbers in the economy through "indirect and induced mechanisms."

The report, Economic Impact of Recovery Act Investments in the Smart Grid http://www.smartgrid.gov/all/news/new_report_says_recovery_act_smart_grid_funding_has_significant_impact_us_economy (http://www.smartgrid.gov/all/news/new_report_says_recovery_act_smart_grid_funding_has_significant_impact_us_economy) , assesses the economic effects of immediate spending, not long-term impacts, and includes employment, total labor income and economic output.

Some of the key findings include:
•         About 47,000 full-time equivalent jobs were supported by the investment grants and demonstration programs
•         Of those jobs, about 12,000 in manufacturing, IT and technical services were directly supported while the remainder were in the companies' supply chains and induced by money spent throughout the broader economy
•         Industrial sectors that benefited directly include computer systems design, technical and scientific services and consulting, electrical/wireless equipment and component manufacturing
•         The smart grid GDP multiplier is higher than it is in many other forms of government investment
•         For every $1 million in direct spending (including both Recovery Act and private sector matching), the GDP rose by $2.5 to $2.6 million depending on the circumstances

The report notes that ongoing follow-up investments paid for by states, ratepayers and the private sector are likely to have a similar positive economic effect and are expected to continue generating high tech and professional jobs as the grid modernization initiative continues.

When you joined the forum a year ago--you were trying hard to be a bully to everyone here, inappropriately prided yourself that you've actually 'ruined' so many forums/sites already, etc..etc..etc..Nobody paid attention to such pathetic blusters and braggings of yours--obviously nobody cared..until such time that you started badmouthing Filipino women. Same case with Dawg, he was also badmouthing Pinays.

You can try to change tactics now manong Juan--as many have noticed the unusual 'pleasantness' in your recent postings in some threads (which by the way, you should continue to do), but do keep in mind that everybody has read both of your postings..especially the female Filipino members of this forum. Yet, and even up to now--you don't feel remorseful about it. Now it's my turn to ask, 'why am i not surprised?'

If there's somebody who should be giving his deepest apology--it should be you, for all those malicious and irreverent postings you had about Filipino women. Don't ask me why i reacted this way, I'm Filipino, and i'm a woman.    But may i ask why you reacted the way you are right now with Dawg's case?? Hmmmm..    but, as i said in my previous postings, you can keep your reasons to yourself. I don't have even a speck of interest why you keep on 'glorifying' the other person. Whatever it is, there is really no need to explain to us.

I'm not sure what 'bullying' means to you--but ifever you did feel i 'bullied' you, then i guess you got a taste of your own medicine huh..and based on your postings, i can say this time, it probably tasted bitter and acrimonious for you. Maybe, wla'y nakabadlong nmo in those 'other sites' that you mirthfully destroyed, but here, you're also a nobody amongst a bunch of nobodies. I am a nobody in this forum too, and happy to be so. Unlike you who tries so hard (by any means) to 'stir' the forum to get other ppol's attention, I really care less if i do or not.
As what I've been telling ppol, i am already bored posting with you. *yawns*
There's no intellectual growth talking about Dawg, Clint Eastwood (or your choice of movies), psychopaths from hell, Shielas, and your braggings about your adventures with Filipino women. You must have noticed that at 1 point, i already posted a yawn after your postings. I'm sorry for the honesty, but obviously, you needed meh to spell it out for you here.

I won't ask Mhikey, or anybody to edit your postings--I even gave up my GM status in the past coz I haven't been using it, and would want other ppol to be given the responsibility to be the forum's conscientious watch. Besides, your postings are yours to keep--or edit. Your postings don't interest meh manong Juan. Your postings mirror who you really are, even if you don't really tell us so much about yourself (except your life's bitterness)..or how you look like. Your postings don't interest meh..(allow meh to be blunt but) you don't interest meh. *another yawn*

I know you are furious with me and my postings--sakit man gud ning maigo tah noh..but no sorry is due.

Bottomline, I have already spent enough time posting with you.
Even if you keep on badmouthing Filipinos (women and doctors), feel free. It's enough that you won't forget crossing path in this forum with somebody who made it clear to you that she abhors your postings. Unless dementia sets in, I know that you won't forget meh. [Haven't forgotten you, Dr. Amalayer. Miss you soooo much! For your sake, consolidating and reposting here a lot of awesome stuff about you. For all the world, especially the o/s Pinoys, to see.] :-* ;D ;)

I have my principles manong Juan--and I don't have to hide behind a blank avatar/profile to freely voice it out in this forum.[Did you delete them, skipper? ??? :) ;)] How bout you?? Why are you hiding??

..but then again, whoever you are--is yours to keep. Keep your anonymity as you please. No biggie coz you are a nobody just like the rest of us in this forum.

And just like what i posted to Dawg in the past, I am a proud Filipino and I care less if you're not. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Dr. VJ Evardone aka Dr. Amalayer really's got clout, doesn't she? ;)
Doesn't matter. Too many have read the earlier posts. And seen her true colours. Me, badmouthing Filipino (women and doctors)? ??? Unbelievable that a doctor would be blurting stupid, insidious and unfounded allegations like that - in an open forum!

Smart Grid: A transformative vision
April 30, 2013 By Wanda K. Reder, chair, IEEE Smart Grid Taskforce

The U.S. economy is healthier today than it has been in recent years, and it is now time to position the country for prosperity. One of the most promising opportunities we have to further bolster the country's economic vitality is to push ahead with electric grid modernization investments that bring the smart grid to reality.
The smart grid vision is a transformative one. The smart grid will improve the overall performance of the grid, reduce carbon emissions, facilitate widespread use of electric vehicles and help create a more vibrant economy and improved way of life. The smart grid will deliver many economic and lifestyle impacts, and some key challenges must be overcome before fully implementing this vision.

A changing energy consumption dynamic
Consumer loads and customer expectations have changed substantially in recent years. We're now in a digital society and the consumer electronics category already represents one of the largest single sources of domestic electricity consumption in developed regions. Furthermore, it is well understood that electricity consumption by digital devices in the residential sector will increase significantly in the coming years.

With more and more electronic products driving electricity demand, more consumers will expect uninterrupted power availability and near-perfect power quality. More commercial businesses, including those that are home-based, will need electric service assurances in order to fully operate and compete. Excluding rare events such as extreme storms like Hurricane Sandy, electric service outages for a typical customer, depending on where they live, range from 90 to 214 minutes or more per year. The industry must accommodate the need for increased electrical reliability to support consumers' digital lifestyles and ensure the economic viability of the country's businesses that are heavily dependent on computers and information technologies.

The shape of the load has also changed substantially, due in large part to the increasing penetration of air conditioners that create occasional but severe peak loads. Utilities have deployed additional, centralized generation along with the necessary transmission and distribution facilities to accommodate these conditions but the strategy is costly because peaks typically occur less than one percent of the time yearly. The industry must find ways to accommodate load growth and deal with peak conditions without building capital-intensive infrastructure that is used so infrequently.

Centralized generation is also inefficient because approximately 15 percent of power transmitted today is lost as it travels across the grid from generation to the end-use. These losses are in addition to the losses that occur during the generation process. Combined, the losses associated with electricity generation and delivery are staggering. For example, when a home consumes 1 kWh of electricity, 3.4 kWh are used to generate and distribute it, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Losses of this magnitude exacerbate the costs to supply power centrally to meet peaking condition.

The inefficiency of centralized asset utilization in the U.S. has been characterized recently in a study by Paul Centolella, published by ElectricityPolicy.com, which found that the average electric generation capacity factor has been below 50 percent since 2002. According to Centolella, many transmission and distribution facilities have even lower average utilization rates. These rates are well below the average rates of other capital-intensive industries, which generally exceed 75 percent.
"As the power industry heads into another major investment cycle, its failure to use its capital assets efficiently is a major challenge it must tackle," Centolella warned in an article for ElectricityPolicy.com.

Smart grid solutions
There is relief in sight, however. The smart grid will introduce transformative technologies and services to meet these very important market needs. The smart grid will improve customer power reliability and power quality by employing network-connected sensors throughout the grid to anticipate and respond to outages in real time nearly instantly. Smart grid technologies will substantially minimize the number and duration of outages so services will be more robust and available.
The smart grid also holds the potential to move the industry away from the centralized infrastructure model. It will augment existing capacity with distributed solutions based on resources such as solar or wind power, combined with battery storage, to meet local power needs and alleviate peak loads.  Because distributed generation is located close to the customer, it reduces the electrical losses that are inherent with distributing power from centralized generation infrastructure.

This not only reduces costs but also can be used to support utilities' and customers' environmental sustainability objectives. Smart grid technologies enable customers to interconnect their own distributed generation, such as rooftop solar panels, to the system and sell their excess capacity back to their local utilities.

With smart grid, customers may become active partners in grid utilization and management by employing smart meter and home automation technologies -- or even smartphone applications. These tools are being developed to allow appliances to operate in conjunction with grid needs and enable customers to more actively participate in demand response programs that help shift their demand off-peak or reduce their energy costs.

Intelligent automation of demand response
Integrating intelligence into end-use devices is key to unleashing demand response in a meaningful way.  Research has found that there is often not enough difference between the cost for peak- and off-peak power to really capture the consumer's attention and create significant behavior change. The industry needs to devise ways to incorporate automatic end-use-load participation into the business model so customers are not bothered by these programs and decisions, and so their lifestyles are not inconvenienced.

Achieving customer engagement in the selection and configuration of electricity services represents a paradigm shift in the industry, which has traditionally delivered services without interacting deeply with the customer base. Greater customer participation is a fundamental part of reforming the system.  It will help utilities achieve their energy-efficiency objectives and lead to better decision making and lower costs for both the utility and customer. Embedded intelligence is needed, however, so consumers do not have to be in the middle of every demand-response decision.

Real cost savings for typical households
According to a 2012 Perfect Power Institute report, there is a real business case for empowering consumers, communities and utilities to invest in smart grid projects.

The Institute reported that consumers could realize financial benefits that exceed the investment costs by a factor of three or more if they, along with local governments and innovators, are engaged as partners in grid modernization. The Institute estimates the potential benefits of investments to be about $1,200 per year for a typical household while the costs are an estimated $400 per year per household.

The Institute noted that the estimated benefits would be even higher if the impact on public health, safety and security could be precisely quantified and included. It spread the investment costs across three main grid categories: power supply, power delivery and end-use consumption. The greatest investments would be made at the consumption level. End-use investments would include local clean power supplies, smart meters and home automation.

Extending smart grid's services and benefits to all markets
The 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was a significant, recent investment in advancing smart grid technologies; however, it is only the very beginning of a long journey ahead.  The purpose of the ARRA was to start a grid modernization movement by funding smart grid pilot and demonstration projects.  ARRA provided $3.4 billion in federal stimulus monies, which were matched with $4.6 billion in private funding, to support 99 projects that are deploying smart grid technologies, tools, and techniques for electric transmission, distribution, advanced metering, and customer systems.
The ARRA projects and funding have helped the industry expedite the adaptation and use of smart grid technologies and opened peoples' minds to the promise of smart grid. In light of the industry's traditionally conservative character, it has accomplished these very important milestones much faster than it would have without this impetus.

While these projects represent notable progress, much more must be done to bring smart grid to fruition. The industry's challenge now is to continue the grid modernization movement by scaling the deployments to more markets and connecting the various components together to fully enable smart and interactive services.

This will require substantial financial investment, because the industry still operates with many infrastructure components and systems that should have been replaced years ago and much of this must be upgraded as the industry moves to smart grid. In fact, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has suggested that by the year 2030, the electric utility industry in the U.S. will need to invest between $338 and $476 billion to modernize the country's grid. Research from the Brattle Group has suggested that grid modernization will require transmission and distribution infrastructure investments amounting to $880 billion through 2030.

Changing regulations to allow grid modernization
While the industry must unleash the needed funding to pave the way for modernization of the grid, the regulatory environment, which was not designed to handle the investment conditions introduced by smart grid, currently stands in the way of this work.

For example, the economic benefits expected from consumers' adaptation to smart grid technologies and participation are achievable only if market reforms are adopted to empower consumers to benefit from their actions and realize revenue from grid services.

Furthermore, the least-cost framework that has traditionally formed the basis of utility investment regulations is a barrier to many smart grid innovations. As the industry moves to smart grid, least-cost policies will become less relevant and regulations will have to adjust to encapsulate the overall value that technology or services.  Such elements as the environmental benefits, loss avoidance, increased system utilization and consumer costs avoided as a result of mitigating outages need to be factored into the analysis to support related electrical system investments.

Call for action
It is time for the industry to find solutions to these modernization issues and for local governments to adapt their policies accordingly so motivated utilities can forge ahead with strategies to realize smart grid's promise.

Local governments must become partners to advance market reform, develop policies that enable grid investments, specify local needs and coordinate infrastructure projects. It is important that consumers, local government officials, entrepreneurs and system operators collaborate to initiate the changes necessary to realize fully the potential benefits.

The vision of a better performing and environmentally responsible power supply that provides economic benefits to consumers and businesses is a realistic one and can be achieved if all participants in this new industry and ecosystem work together.  By working together to push ahead with electric grid modernization, participants will also play vital roles in helping build a more vibrant and prosperous national economy.

hallelujah!!  although, the other person isn't humble enough to extend apologies to whom it's due, that's ok.  as long as the "making up of stories" ceases (and the childish name-calling.........aaaah, so what, I've been called worse.  hahaha !!).  If she's going to say something, tell the truth and not twist the story to insinuate that I wronged her.........otherwise, just shut up about it!!  'coz her story just end up becoming more of a lie (to think that she's insinuating I'm the liar   ). unlike me, I always have proof with mine (nah! I really don't wanna get into that! ). I don't mind people avidly following my posts on this one, all the way to the other threads (just don't make it too obvious), like I told her before, this is a public forum. but please don't let emotions take over them preventing them from using good judgment.......... or ........... she does as she say, "leave me alone!" (I don't know why she say that, since I'm the one who should........... must be her favorite expression).  I haven't even remotely thought of interacting with that person since our so-called relationship/commitment ended, whatever it is.  and whatever that may be, it's the past...........too bad, so sad........booo hooo hooo. move on and get on with your life!!!!     there, I hope that's clear enough but wasn't too blunt. hehehe.

ACHTUNG! ACHTUNG!
TAAL VOLCANO'S ABOUT TO ERUPT!
EVERYBODY! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!!

If you happen to visit the Philippines, one tourist spot you must not miss is the Taal Volcano. The scenic spot is at Taal Vista Lodge. The best time to go there is during a very foggy morning. You will be begging the fog to open up so you can see the view. If the fog should pity you, it will open up but only for a short moment. Then, it closes and that’s the end of it.

If the fog doesn’t open up, then tough luck. You have to come back another day.

I mean, on a clear, sunny day, you can see that it is really very beautiful. But you will be depriving yourself of the excitement of begging.

It’s like the difference between looking at a very beautiful woman that’s already naked and looking at her strip teasing. I prefer the latter. There’s that element of torture- that excite of begging, “Please remove your …..”. And when she has removed everything, it will only be for a short moment. Then, she runs backstage.

If she doesn’t appear, then tough luck. You have to come back another day.

No wait. The similarity does not end there. It is not only very beautiful. It is also very peaceful, very calm, very serene, etc., etc., etc. But underneath it is a smouldering lave. It is really a fiery volcano that could erupt anytime and claim 600 lives or more. Yes, indeed! It is no different from a woman. Of course, there are exceptions.

Why do people want to live nearby? Because the soil is very fertile due to the volcanic ash that is rich in phosphates. Yes, fertile like a woman.

In spite of her mercurial behaviour, I still prefer her to him. I must admit that it is a lot more fun to be with her than with him. Until she erupts. Then, I’d better run for my life.

FPL project signals "the smart grid has arrived" declares MIT
Smart Grid Technology May 3, 2013

Florida Power & Light is one of many utilities that have been working on deploying smart grid technologies. But while many utilities are working on smart grids or installing elements of smart grids, MIT Technology Review says FPL is the first http://www.technologyreview.com/news/514461/with-florida-project-the-smart-grid-has-arrived/ (http://www.technologyreview.com/news/514461/with-florida-project-the-smart-grid-has-arrived/)  to have built an operating "comprehensive and large scale smart grid."

"What is different is the breadth of what FPL's done," Silver Spring Networks executive VP of global development Eric Dresselhuys was quoted as saying in the MIT article.

While other utilities have installed more smart meters than FPL, the key to taking advantage of a smart grid's potential is based on networking meters together with sensors at critical points along the grid, such as transformers, substations and local and high-voltage distribution lines.

During the course of its smart grid program, FPL has installed 4.5 million smart meters and 10,000 other devices. All of those pieces of equipment are networked and sending data back to the utility, data that can be used to identify problems before they cause an outage – and reduce the length and area affected if outages do happen.
Since the project was wrapped up last week, its impact is yet to be assessed. But elements of the smart grid have been running for a year or more, and the outcome has been improvements in the grid's operation.

FPL's smart grid has demonstrated its effectiveness in a number of ways: from helping a customer find a problem with his air conditioner because he was able to see a spike in his energy use and compare it to the previous year to sensors to that monitor transformer health. In one instance, the new sensors found a problem transformer soon enough to avoid an outage that would have affected 45,000 people.
Title: The Smart Grid
Post by: juan on May 05, 2013, 07:39:31 PM
Maybe you have heard of the Smart Grid on the news or from your energy provider. But not everyone knows what the grid is, let alone the Smart Grid. "The grid," refers to the electric grid, a network of transmission lines, substations, transformers and more that deliver electricity from the power plant to your home or business. It’s what you plug into when you flip on your light switch or power up your computer.

Our current electric grid was built in the 1890s and improved upon as technology advanced through each decade. Today, it consists of more than 9,200 electric generating units with more than 1 million megawatts of generating capacity connected to more than 300,000 miles of transmission lines.

Although the electric grid is considered an engineering marvel, we are stretching its patchwork nature to its capacity. To move forward, we need a new kind of electric grid, one that is built from the bottom up to handle the groundswell of digital and computerized equipment and technology dependent on it—and one that can automate and manage the increasing complexity and needs of electricity in the 21st Century.

What Makes a Grid “Smart?”
In short, the digital technology that allows for two-way communication between the utility and its customers, and the sensing along the transmission lines is what makes the grid smart. Like the Internet, the Smart Grid will consist of controls, computers, automation, and new technologies and equipment working together, but in this case, these technologies will work with the electrical grid to respond digitally to our quickly changing electric demand.

What does a Smart Grid do?
The Smart Grid represents an unprecedented opportunity to move the energy industry into a new era of reliability, availability, and efficiency that will contribute to our economic and environmental health. During the transition period, it will be critical to carry out testing, technology improvements, consumer education, development of standards and regulations, and information sharing between projects to ensure that the benefits we envision from the Smart Grid become a reality. The benefits associated with the Smart Grid include:

- More efficient transmission of electricity
- Quicker restoration of electricity after power disturbances
- Reduced operations and management costs for utilities, and ultimately lower power costs for consumers
- Reduced peak demand, which will also help lower electricity rates
- Increased integration of large-scale renewable energy systems
- Better integration of customer-owner power generation systems, including renewable energy systems
- Improved security

Today, an electricity disruption such as a blackout can have a domino effect—a series of failures that can affect banking, communications, traffic, and security. This is a particular threat in the winter, when homeowners can be left without heat. A smarter grid will add resiliency to our electric power system and make it better prepared to address emergencies such as severe storms, earthquakes, large solar flares, and terrorist attacks. Because of its two-way interactive capacity, the Smart Grid will allow for automatic rerouting when equipment fails or outages occur. This will minimize outages and minimize the effects when they do happen.

When a power outage occurs, Smart Grid technologies will detect and isolate the outages, containing them before they become large-scale blackouts. The new technologies will also help ensure that electricity recovery resumes quickly and strategically after an emergency—routing electricity to emergency services first, for example. In addition, the Smart Grid will take greater advantage of customer-owned power generators to produce power when it is not available from utilities. By combining these "distributed generation" resources, a community could keep its health center, police department, traffic lights, phone system, and grocery store operating during emergencies.

In addition, the Smart Grid is a way to address an aging energy infrastructure that needs to be upgraded or replaced. It’s a way to address energy efficiency, to bring increased awareness to consumers about the connection between electricity use and the environment. And it’s a way to bring increased national security to our energy system—drawing on greater amounts of home-grown electricity that is more resistant to natural disasters and attack.

Giving Consumers Control
The Smart Grid is not just about utilities and technologies; it is about giving you the information and tools you need to make choices about your energy use. If you already manage activities such as personal banking from your home computer, imagine managing your electricity in a similar way. A smarter grid will enable an unprecedented level of consumer participation.

For example, you will no longer have to wait for your monthly statement to know how much electricity you use. With a smarter grid, you can have a clear and timely picture of it. "Smart meters," and other mechanisms, will allow you to see how much electricity you use, when you use it, and its cost. Combined with real-time pricing, this will allow you to save money by using less power when electricity is most expensive.

While the potential benefits of the Smart Grid are usually discussed in terms of economics, national security, and renewable energy goals, the Smart Grid has the potential to help you save money by helping you to manage your electricity use and choose the best times to purchase electricity. And you can save even more by generating your own power.

Building and Testing the Smart Grid
The Smart Grid will consist of millions of pieces and parts—controls, computers, power lines, and new technologies and equipment. It will take some time for all the technologies to be perfected, equipment installed, and systems tested before it comes fully on line. And it won’t happen all at once—the Smart Grid is evolving, piece by piece, over the next decade or so. Once mature, the Smart Grid will likely bring the same kind of transformation that the Internet has already brought to the way we live, work, play, and learn.

Paying for electricity by the kilowatt hour: Is the end coming?
Smart Grid Markets May 3, 2013

We've been paying for electricity by the kilowatt hour for years, but is that concept no longer working and no longer fair today? That was the context of some discussion at the Bloomberg New Energy Finance Summit recently held in New York City. The only certainty seemed to be that how we pay for electricity http://energy.korea.com/archives/50768 (http://energy.korea.com/archives/50768)  is going to change.

According to an Energy Korea news story, the dialogue seems to have started when a representative from a German utility asked how long customers would continue paying for power by the kilowatt hour. Urban Keussen, SVP of technology and innovation for Germany-based E.ON, observed "I think we'll see something similar to telecom." He was referring to the numerous phone plans that have dropped paying by the minute in favor of flat fees.

Despite its less than sunny weather, Germany is ranked as the world's leading solar power producer with 30 gigawatts of installed capacity. And even though the feed-in tariffs that have made solar so attractive to so many are dropping, rooftop solar is still a good option for consumers. The problem is that leaves other consumers to pick up the tab for the electric network.

The story notes that regulators and utilities have talked of re-working the payment model for a long time, and it's clear participants at the summit have been thinking about it.

As Tom Blalek, chief smart grid engineer for San Diego Gas & Electric, said "We're looking at unbundling rate designs."

While there were no concrete suggestions for what could be coming, one observation was that higher connection fees are definitely going to be part of it.

And it's not just about solar. New York chairman and energy policy and finance Richard Kaufmann said earlier this year that in at least a dozen states, big commercial customers are moving to their own combined heat and power (CHP) installations rather than pay a utility for electricity.

Meaning? A smaller number of people paying a larger share of the cost, similar to the German situation.

Jon Wellinghoff, FERC chairman, also was at the meeting and shared thoughts similar to Kaufmann's: "We'll see natural gas in the form of CHP as the next distributed generation." And that means, whether it is solar or CHP, "utilities won't be able to recover fixed costs." He agreed that larger fixed fees will be a certainty in the future.

Smart grid market good to go for the rest of the decade
May 9, 2013

The smart grid market is still immature, says a new Navigant Research white paper -- and that's a good thing for those who've gotten used to what Navigant calls "high risk and high reward." Although we're not going to see the stimulus-fueled hypergrowth from a few years back, "worldwide smart grid spending will remain robust through the balance of the decade" with a compound annual growth rate of 10%.

Well.. robust in most subsectors. But not in smart meters, where the continuing decline in North American shipments is pulling down worldwide growth.

Navigant's white paper is titled “Smart Grid: 10 Trends to Watch in 2013 and Beyond.” I'll let you review the 10 trends in the press release below. Or you can jump to the Navigant site and read the report for free if you don't mind registering with your full contact details. One warning: Navigant is too optimistic about home energy management in my view. Use the Talk Back form below to tell us which predictions you think are accurate. - Jesse Berst

Well into its second decade of existence, the smart grid market strongly demonstrates the correlation between high risk and high reward.  Although several segments are well-established, little of this market can be characterized as mature.  According to a new white paper from Navigant Research http://www.navigantresearch.com/ (http://www.navigantresearch.com/) , worldwide smart grid spending will remain robust through the balance of the decade, totaling $494 billion during the period from 2012 to 2020, while smart meter shipments in North America will continue to decline for the next two years.

The paper, which identifies ten trends that will shape the smart grid market in 2013 and beyond, is available for free download on Navigant Research’s website.

“Smart grid markets are taking their own time to mature,” says Bob Lockhart, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “There is considerable revenue potential for smart grid vendors, but it is not always clear – even to industry insiders – to whom the majority of that revenue will go.”

The key trends covered by Navigant Research in the white paper are as follows:

•         Smart grid spending remains robust
•         Smart meter shipments in North America continue to decline
•         Home energy management gains momentum
•         Demand response shifts to a flexibility market
•         Adoption of automated demand response picks up
•         Utilities rely more upon real-time grid analytics
•         Disaster recovery and service restoration become more efficient
•         Distributed energy generation poses more issues
•         Meter data management struggles but survives
•         Cyber security market offers limited promise

The white paper, “Smart Grid: 10 Trends to Watch in 2013 and Beyond http://www.navigantresearch.com/research/smart-grid-10-trends-to-watch-in-2013-and-beyond (http://www.navigantresearch.com/research/smart-grid-10-trends-to-watch-in-2013-and-beyond) ”, provides insights into key issues that will shape the smart grid market in the months and years ahead, with summary forecasts of smart grid, smart metering, and automated demand response markets.  Each of the topics in this white paper is examined more deeply in Navigant Research market overview reports.  The white paper also compares the development of these markets across different world regions.

Utilities Have Far to Go in Smart Grid Maturity - 09 May 2013

Utilities of all sizes have various smart grid projects underway, whether installing two-way digital smart meters, deploying self-healing distribution technology or integrating data across the business operation.

And then there are a handful of utilities that are doing all of these things. In a new report, Utility Smart Grid Outlook in North America 2013: Technologies, Strategies & Case Studies GTM Research, ranks 40 utilities that serve one-third of U.S. electricity customers, based on their current adoption of smart grid technologies.

CenterPoint Energy, Pacific Gas & Electric and San Diego Gas & Electric are tied for the top position with an overall average ranking of 4.2 out of a total five possible points, ranging from one for "exploratory" to five for" optimized" within five different categories.

Data management and analytics had one of the largest gaps between the top and bottom, but also had one of the lowest average maturity rankings amongst the categories. Many utilities are just beginning to collect, filter, store and analyse data coming off of their smart systems. Some utilities that are deploying smart meters do not have a meter data management system. Many utilities are collecting data off of meters but not doing anything with it.

________________________________________

When applying for roles within the mining, oil and gas sectors, you will want to give yourself the best possible chance of being invited to interview and, ultimately, offered the position. Of course, you will need to be qualified for the role, with relevant skills and experience, but timing can also be key.

Time of day
Research by NASDAQ has indicated that the time at which an employer receives your job application can have an impact on how likely it is that you will be considered for the role. According to this article from AOL http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2010/01/19/best-day-to-get-a-job/ (http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2010/01/19/best-day-to-get-a-job/) , those who send applications during working hours and towards the middle of the week are less likely to have their resume buried under a deluge of more pressing tasks. If you are currently working on a FIFO contract and searching for your next role, then you should certainly take advantage of the fact that you may not be confined to submitting applications at the weekends, as you may have more time to do so during the week. This could give you the edge over other applicants.

Frame of mind
The best time to apply for a new job is, without a doubt, when you have the time to complete your application properly and pay plenty of attention to detail. With geosciences jobs, as well as many mining, oil and gas roles, being very much in demand, there is little point on completing an application half-heartedly. A rushed resume or application can reflect badly on a candidate, even if they possess the necessary skills for the role. Only apply for a job when you are in the right frame of mind and not feeling pushed for time.

Right place, right time
A good number of the jobs within the mining, oil and gas industries are for short-term or contract projects. Therefore, ensuring that your application is successful can sometimes be a case of being in the right place at the right time - a stance which is confirmed in this article from mainstreet.com. There are often new and exciting projects being launched, so it can be worth keeping up to date with the latest industry developments throughout Australia so that you know when and where new opportunities might present themselves. You can also set up job alerts to make sure you get your application in quickly for sought-after roles.

I have my principles manong Juan--and I don't have to hide behind a blank avatar/profile to freely voice it out in this forum.[Did you delete them, skipper? ??? ;D ;)] How bout you?? Why are you hiding??

..but then again, whoever you are--is yours to keep. Keep your anonymity as you please. No biggie coz you are a nobody just like the rest of us in this forum.

And just like what i posted to Dawg in the past, I am a proud Filipino and I care less if you're not.

**********************************************************************

Just blurting out stupid, insidious, unfounded allegations. Anyway, why no similar attacks against old fatso? Understandable. Old fatso's not badmouthing Filipinos (women and doctors).  Merely toying with poor Filipino lass. But did he go for the matron afterwards? ;D ;)

Yes, indeed! Australia's a frontier of beauty. So many highly rewarding projects to participate in -- smart grid, mining, gas, fracking, etc., etc., etc.
Worst case scenario, can always start as a toilet cleaner in the mines and be paid about $70k annually. Then, take it from there.

And help me save Australia's endangered species. Hehe :) ;)

Australia - Smart Grid - Major Players and Projects

Synopsis
Significant progress has been made within the industry in relation to the deployment of smart technologies that, over time, will create a smart national grid.

The past five years have seen confusion, resistance and the lack of a strategic approach towards a holistic policy aimed at creating a smarter energy structure that could reduce energy usage by 30%-40% without having a major impact on people’s lifestyle, just by being smarter. All of the electricity companies are now involved in the implementation of smart grids – a process that will take a decade, or perhaps several decades, to complete.

Overall some $200 billion will be invested in the national energy structure (not just smart grids). The first results from projects such as Smart Grid, Smart City indicate that the results greatly exceed expectations; the same applies to companies involved in the smart meter rollout in Victoria. However a holistic government policy continues to be the key to success, rather than the current hotchpotch of policies. Energy is heavily influenced by government regulations and unless that is sorted out it is difficult for the industry to develop cohesive strategies that will see a more comprehensive approach towards a smarter energy system for the country.

What you need to know right now about smart grid sensors
Smart Grid News Jun 25, 2013

Quick Take: A few weeks back I warned that we are about to see a changing of the guard in smart grid sensors. The market is undergoing radical change as older devices are replaced by next-generation technologies. Because it's important to prepare, I thought you might value a past presentation by Dr. William Kao of California Polytechnic Institute. I've summarized some key points below, or download the slides here http://www.smartgridnews.com/artman/publish/Business_Markets_Pricing/Sensor-Devices-and-Sensor-Network-Applications-for-the-Smart-Grid-Smart-Cities-5840.html (http://www.smartgridnews.com/artman/publish/Business_Markets_Pricing/Sensor-Devices-and-Sensor-Network-Applications-for-the-Smart-Grid-Smart-Cities-5840.html) . - By Jesse Berst

Kao believes sensor networks will be a key enabler to provide real-time information for the smart grid. The measurements needed for smart grid fall into six categories.
•         Voltage
•         Current
•         Temperature
•         Moisture
•         Continuity
•         Phase measurements

Important smart grid applications include advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), smart voltage sensors, remote capacitor control, outage detection, transformer monitoring, high voltage line temperature, weather conditions, distributed generation and load balancing, energy storage and dispatch.
1
Key applications in adjacent sectors include smart buildings, home energy management systems, intelligent city transportation systems and urban precision agriculture.

A major gating factor may be the need for data fusion – gathering, filtering, aggregating and analyzing data from multiple sources. The market also suffers from a lack of interoperability.

Jesse Berst is the founder and Chief Analyst of SGN and Chairman of the Smart Cities Council, an industry coalition.

Price we pay for being exiles, mate. So easy to backbite us ‘coz we’re not around. :)
"Bigotry and intolerance, silenced by argument, endeavors to silence by persecution, in old days by fire and sword, in modern days by the tongue."
- Charles Simmons
Bigotry -- change your style, Juan! Yet, turning a blind eye on fat oldsh##. But, of course, he was merely indulging in saintly pleasures and angelic lusts with a Filipino lass. Hehe :D ;)
Bigot, as defined in dictionary, is someone who is intolerantly convinced of the rightness of a particular opinlon, practice, etc. Like calling another dom 'coz dislikes his style. Either directly or via insinuations or cleverly disguised little farces.

Yes, bigotry. A disease that's still plaguing the Phil.
Eg, marrying a young Pinay. Ok, if he's a puti. Not uncommon for a puti retiree to go to the Phil, marry a young Pinay, and live there permanently.
Once read a Cebu newspaper comment by a visiting puti news editor. Walked along CC cbd 1 early morning for a coffee. Still quiet. Went into a cafe. Saw a puti retiree on a rocking chair. A teenage Pinay was sitting on his lap. Being the only customer and also a puti, they weren't embarrassed and carried on.
Later learned Pinay was puti's wife. Pinay's mom owned the cafe. All lived upstairs.
A common Internet-dating site ad is about retirement living in Phil. Marry a young Pinay. Many looking for foreign nationals to marry. Age is not a problem.
A Pinoy, who'd do something similar, would be called a dom with lecherous inclination.
Needless for me to say more. Look what's happening to me here. A never-ending pissing contest target. And reaching retirement age is still miles away.
Considering further, I'm one of those who packed up their few wordly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life. Endure being treated as 2nd class Aussie.
Sending money home. Helping the Phil perpetually ailing economy.
Is this what we, overseas Pinoys, get in return? Being treated as 2nd class to the puti?
 ???

No different from western hypocrisy. Obama, himself a non-white, placing a marine contingent in Darwin as symbol that he will protect Australia from invasion up north, viz., Asian nations. Yet, turning a blind eye on racism in Australia. :-[
"Candor and accountability in a democracy is very important. Hypocrisy has no place. (Alan Dershowitz) :)"

Quote from: OMG! on January 21, 2008, 09:16:39 PM

Men are likely to live longer if they marry a younger woman, new research suggests.
A man's chances of dying early are cut by a fifth if their bride is between 15 and 17 years their junior.
The risk of premature death is reduced by 11 per cent if they marry a woman seven to nine years younger.
The study at Germany's Max Planck Institute also found that men marrying older women are more likely to die early. The results suggest that women do not experience the same benefits of marrying a toy boy or a sugar daddy. Wives with husbands older or younger by between seven and nine years increase their chances of dying early by 20 per cent. This rises to 30 per cent if the age difference is close to 15 and 17 years.
Scientists say the figures for men may be the result of natural selection – that only the healthiest, most successful older men are able to attract younger mates.
"Another theory is that a younger woman will care for a man better and therefore he will live longer," said institute spokesman Sven Drefahl.
The study examined deaths between 1990 and 2005 for the entire population of Denmark.
On average in Europe, most men marry women around three years younger

The secret to a long life might be how old your father or grandfather was when they reproduced.

If you could find out how long you had to live, would you want to know? Well, for those brave enough to seek an answer, scientists studying aging at Northwestern University have discovered a surprising biological cue that could help predict length of life, according to MedicalXpress.com.

The cue? Look to dear old dad. In fact, the older, the better. Researchers found that fathers who waited until they were older to have children tended to spawn kids that were more biologically equipped to live longer.

"If our recent ancestors waited until later in adulthood before they reproduced, perhaps for cultural reasons, it would make sense for our bodies to prepare for something similar by investing the extra resources necessary to maintain healthy functioning at more advanced ages," said Christopher W. Kuzawa, co-author of the study and associate professor of anthropology at Northwestern, when describing the working hypothesis of the study.

The study, conducted in the Philippines, confirmed a direct correlation between the age of a man when he became a father and the average length of his children's telomeres at birth. Telomeres are strands of repetitive nucleotides that are found on the ends of chromosomes and are believed to protect the chromosomes from deterioration. Because telomeres shorten each time the chromosomes replicate, the longer they are to begin with, the more resistant DNA is to aging. Or at least, that's the theory.

Interestingly, the study didn't just find the correlation to exist between fathers and their children, but also between grandfathers and their grandchildren. In other words, the effect seems to carry over across at least two generations. So even if your father reproduced at a young age, if his father reproduced at a later age you may still reap the benefits of longer telomeres.

"The idea that information about the environment can be passed on biochemically from one generation to the next is certainly not something new," said M. Geoffrey Hayes, co-author of the study, assistant professor of medicine at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine. "But what is quite unique in the case of our telomere study is that we're seeing an association across more than one generation."

Although further study is needed over a longer period of time to determine if the children of older fathers really do live longer, the fact that they are born with longer telomeres has researchers confident that the answer will be yes.

Even so, the researchers cautioned men against delaying reproduction until too late in life. Previous studies have shown that older fathers are also more likely to pass along harmful mutations to their offspring. So there's some risk involved in choosing to be an older father too.

Smart grid success: Australia declares its program a win (with caveats)
SmartGridNews.com Feb 7, 2014

Quick Take: Australia's federal government has just completed an audit of its inaugural smart grid trial. The verdict? A success overall, albeit with a few reservations, as explained atAustralia's Delimiter.com web site. For more details, download the full report. - Jesse Berst

The Australian federal government's Auditor-General has published an extensive audit of the country's initial smart grid trial. It concludes that most aspects were a success, with a few small exceptions.

The government allocated $100 million towards the effort, which launched in earnest in June 2010. The consortium included energy utility Ausgrid, AGL Energy, Sydney Water Corporation, Hunter Water Australia, Newcastle City Council. IBM and GE EnergyAustralia.

The three-year project promised utilities real-time information for better grid control It promised customers real-time analysis of electricity usage for better energy decisions. Deliverables included smart meters for residential customers; testing of new rate programs; web portals for customers; grid-side applications for reliability and renewable energy integration; smart gas and water metering; and a small trial of electric vehicles.

The auditor gave a passing grid to the grid-side applications, to the integration of renewables, to the smart meters, and to the EV trial.

On the negative side, a plan to test retail electricity sales fell short of its goal of enrolling 20,000 participants.

Jesse Berst is the founder and Chief Analyst of SGN and Chairman of the Smart Cities Council, an industry coalition.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has reformed the 476 visa scheme resulting in a 900% increase in the number of overseas graduates eligible to work in Australia.

What is the 476 visa?
The 476 visa is designed for engineering graduates who obtained a tertiary engineering degree to live and work in Australia for up to 18 months. Applicants have to be younger than 31 years of age. [Like me.] ;D

Prior to the reforms, the list of approved institutions was quite short with only 108 institutions listed. Now the list recognises all universities accredited by Engineers Australia, the peak body responsible for assessing skilled migration in the engineering sector.

Industry supports change
To give some perspective to this change, Industry association, Consult Australia, says the number of approved universities in the USA has jumped from 16 to 386. [Before, only UP was accredited in the Philippines. Dunno how many more were added since.]  :-\

Megan Motto, CEO of Consult Australia, explains the significance of the decision to expand the list of approved institutions on the engineering skills shortage in Australia.

“By extrapolating the trends for visa holders of Britain, the US, South Africa, Canada and Malaysia, we predict the permanent engineering workforce will be boosted by a minimum of four per cent.”

“The reality is that our engineering industry desperately needs  graduates to progress through the seniority ranks in Australia to subsidise the shortage of local engineers.”

It’s expected regional areas will benefit from these changes including mining, energy and oil and gas operations. As the 476 visa can be converted to a general skilled migration, the reforms are expected to have a long-term impact on the engineering workforce.

What this means for jobseekers
If you’re a young, qualified engineer, it’s just become easier to work in Australia. As the engineering skills shortage continues to plague the Australian resources industry, government, industry, and industry associations are working together to bring more qualified people into the Australian workforce. Employers in the mining industry, oil companies and energy businesses are all experiencing a severe shortage of engineers. Now is a great time for young engineers to consider an engineering job in Australia.

Since I’m really bored right now, and I have absolutely nothing to do, I’ll repost some of my favorite posts.
Uhm, I might get a little carried away, so there might be more than “some”. They’re really nice though. For me, at least.

newsflash!!!!!
Australia's population will reach 23M just after 10pm (AEST) tonight with the birth of a baby boy.
Target population is 40M by 2050.
 :) ;)
Here's the guideline .....

Australia is confronting an aging population. Long story short, the Australian human race is an endangered species.

As such, it's imperative for every Aussie bloke to have as many female sexual partners as possible ... breed an entire herd;

Doesn't work for women ... one woman can't breed an entire herd.

The older the male sexual partner, the healthier and longer-living the offspring;

The older the female sexual partner, the higher the risk of having babies with Down Syndrome.

If still not enough, we import human species.

Selection criteria:
male must be as old as I am ... or even older;
female must be as young as Adelyn ... or even younger.

Please be guided accordingly.
 :) ;)

On a reflective note, both RJ and Felix reactions were uncalled for.

My joke was purely for fun ... absolutely no malice in it. In fact, sweets pointed it out that it's an ASSet. :)

Another thing. Once again, beware of that Queen of Wands Reversed card! It's a very vicious card. Don't remember ever had it.

So timely ... right after posting those pa lingaw ... jolts&surprises, crisis arising ... "Don't like the smell of it at all" ... goosebumps ... RJ's post about clan war.

Have this uneasy feeling ... a premonition ... 6th sense. Meant for you? Or me? Or us both? :-\

Note that its last statement WATCH OUT FOR PHONINESS refers to any person. :)
