A recent study by KPMG has revealed a huge 92% increase in long-distance commuters over the past five years. Nearly 7,000 residents are commuting to interstate locations or to one of Queensland’s regional mining centres.
This choice has been attributed to the attractive Gold Coast lifestyle and sees residents commuting up to 100km for work, to places as far as Brisbane, Sydney and the Bowen Basin. “Australian’s have long demonstrated their preference for a beach lifestyle, which is why the Gold Coast is now this nation’s sixth largest city,” said KPMG demographer, Bernard Salt. “What has become evident from the 2011 Census is that once Australians get a taste of the Gold Coast lifestyle, they simply do not want to leave.”
Mr Salt also commented that additional direct flights to mining centres including Emerald and Moranbah, in central Queensland, would provide a better service for the area and potentially boost employment. With additional regional flights, a whole range of mining jobs would become viable options as more commuter routes are opened up. Some Gold Coast commuters currently need to travel to Brisbane before catching a connecting flight to a smaller, regional location.
Tim Tate, Mayor of the Gold Coast, wasn’t surprised by the results and commented: “I always knew the Gold Coast is a good place to bring up a family… but now it’s backed up by hard data.”
