Loon, Bohol -- Following the confirmed cases of chikungunya and measles here, the Region 7 office of the Department of Health has sent a team to conduct vector management and mopped up immunization in this town.
Of the 12 samples sent to the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine last December, half tested positive with chikungunya while one was confirmed with rubella, also known as German measles.
Renan Cimafranca, chief of DOH 7 Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, bared that while they are waiting for the results of the second batch of samples sent to RITM they have already conducted immunization and integrated vector management in the five adjacent barangays of Loon last week.
Said barangays are Catagbacan Handig, Catagbacan Sur, Catagbacan Norte, Poblacion and Pundol where the DoH7 team treated their mosquito nets with chemicals that can kill minute insects.
Low volume of spraying and fogging were also done.
Cimafranca disclosed that since September last year chikungunya cases have been recorded here.
However, the cases have reportedly increased after the October 15 earthquake and the successive rainy days during the last quarter of 2013 and early this year.
The RESU 7 official explained the uncollected debris and rubble after the earthquake have possibly stored stagnant waters, making them a potential breeding sites of the mosquitoes.
Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes.
It causes fever and severe joint pain.
Other symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rashes which is also common among those who have measles.
The disease shares some clinical signs with dengue, and can be misdiagnosed in areas where dengue is common.
For the immunization, DoH 7 has identified a health center for those who have yet to be vaccinated.
Barangay health workers were the ones assigned to identify those eligible to undergo the vaccination.
Within this week, Cimafranca also added they are expected to visit the nearby town of Calape following the 11 reported cases of possible chikungunya and measles.
Moreover, he urged the residents in the area to avoid storing water in uncovered containers as this is crucial in preventing the spread of the mosquitos’ population.

Bus plunge kills 13 in Philippines
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A bus veered off a mountain road in the northern Philippines and fell into a 500-meter (1,600-foot) deep ravine Friday, killing at least 13 people, including a Dutch woman, officials said.
Another 31 were being treated in a hospital, said Fairlane Amungan, a provincial disaster response official. Among them was a Dutchman who was traveling with the woman from the Netherlands who died, and two children.
The crash happened in Bontoc, a resort town 280 kilometers (175 miles) north of Manila known for its mountainside rice terraces, said police Inspector Ramon Garcia.
The Office of Civil Defense said the bus from Manila had about 47 passengers on board. Amungan said authorities were still determining the exact number of people on the bus as they searched for more victims.
Garcia said the weather was fine at the time of the crash, and investigators were looking into mechanical problems or human error.

(UPDATE2) Tado Jimenez, best known for co-hosting various noontime shows on ABS-CBN in early 2000s, was among the 14 people killed when a tourist bus fell into a ravine Friday.
Bontoc police chief, Senior Inspector Benjamin Challoy confirmed to Yahoo Southeast Asia that Tado, whose real name was Arvin Jimenez, was among the fatalities. Challoy said the 39-year-old comedian was dead on the spot.
“Mahaba ang buhok at ako mismo and naglagay sa kanya sa black bag. Base sa identification card, Arvin Jimenez ang pangalan niya,” Challoy said.
The accident occurred around 7:20 a.m. in Bontoc, Mountain Province.
On Thursday, February 6, Tado even posted on Instagram that he has a long journey going to Bontoc.

That’s Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile’s advice to Sen. Jinggoy Estrada.
Enrile celebrated his 90th birthday with a dinner with family and close political allies on Thursday.
Estrada spoke about it to reporters on Saturday.
“Stay strong, he said. He said he was already going home [but] I was just on my way up,” Estrada quoted Enrile as saying.
“He said he had experienced triumphs [and] failures, and he told me I [was] still on my way there, that’s why I had to be strong,” Estrada added.
Enrile, Estrada, Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr. and several former members of the House of Representatives and government officials are facing plunder charges in the Office of the Ombudsman over the P10-billion pork barrel scam allegedly engineered by businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles.
Enrile and Estrada made the headlines again last week after new whistle-blower Ruby Tuason returned from the United States, publicly acknowledged her role in the scam, and disclosed that she personally delivered kickbacks from Napoles’ racket to Estrada and to Enrile’s former chief of staff, Jessica Lucila “Gigi” Reyes.
Estrada said his father, former President Joseph Estrada, who is now mayor of Manila, also had words of encouragement for Enrile.
“You can never put a good man down. He’s the best lawyer the Senate ever had,” Estrada quoted his father as telling Enrile.
Estrada said the dinner guests serenaded Enrile.
“Manong Johnny said in his impromptu speech that our singing for him made him think it was already his despedida (farewell) party,” Estrada said.
“I told him, ‘No, no, no. Of course, not,’” Estrada added.
Estrada wouldn’t say where the dinner was held, but said the guests included Vice President Jejomar Binay, some members of the minority in the Senate, Enrile’s wife, Cristina, daughter Katrina and sisters Armida Siguion-Reyna and Irma Potenciano.
Asked about Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV’s remark on Friday that Enrile could be dropping with Tuason’s testimony pinning down Estrada but seemingly exonerating Enrile, Estrada said, “I don’t believe that.”
“Manong Johnny’s not like that,” Estrada said.

CEBU CITY, Philippines—The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has advised around 100 residents of Maribojoc, Bohol, to leave their houses which are located near the coast after a fault line appeared following the magnitude-7.2 earthquake that rocked Cebu and Bohol on Oct. 15 last year.
Maribojoc Mayor Leoncio Evasco, who was here to attend a forum, said he received a letter from the MGB Central Visayas office advising him to inform the residents to leave the area for their safety.
The earthquake caused a reverse fault in Bohol, with an increase in elevation of about three meters in Barangay (village) Anonang, Inabanga, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said the earthquake had caused a general uplift of three-fourths of Bohol island and pushed the southwestern part of the province toward Cebu by 55 centimeters.
The coastline in Maribojoc has risen and appears to have reclaimed 55 centimeters of land.
