 Four people died and more than 1,000 others were displaced due to floods caused by heavy rains in the provinces of Central Mindanao, disaster management officials said.

In a report, regional civil defense director Minda Morante said three of the fatalities were from South Cotabato while one was from Sarangani.

All were buried in landslides.

They were identified as Nonoy Ga, 74; Monita Ga, 71; and Diron Tamarang, 70, all from Tupi, South Cotabato. Another victim was identified as Anita Ochova, 63, of Glan, Sarangani.

The five injured were identified as Mercy Magbanua, 27, and one-year-old Kathlyn Magbanua, both from Tupi town; Jay Argal, 24, of Tulunan, North Cotabato, Jojit Mangisel of Koronadal City and Cristy Ochova, 31, of Glan.

Heavy rains caused by an intertropical convergence zone from evening of June 23 to morning of the following day caused floods in nine towns, two cities and 43 barangays.

Dozens of villages in Koronadal City, some 40 kilometers southeast of Maguindanao, were hit by rampaging floods Wednesday after more than 12 hours of heavy downpour.

Morante said the floods have affected 797 families or 3,985 persons and have displaced 1,798 individuals.

The cost of agriculture damage caused by the floods has reached P6.93 million.

The floods also destroyed 40 houses and damaged five dikes and nine bridges.

Local disaster management officials are monitoring the situation in affected areas and conducting damage assessment. – John Unson
