Hii Lj--i've been on 'vacation' for the past weeks..then next week would be all work.hehe
Done with training and starting my new job. ::) I'll be spending more time in the hospital than at home, in front of my laptop. I'll probably drop by to say hi from time to time..but i'll definitely miss hanging out here 'full time'. 8)

klaro kaayo gikan ngkaon cherry popsicle.hehe we have 30-hour hospital calls gitZ, especially ICU. I can't drink coffee coz I get palpitations, so i usually just eat popsicles coz the cold would keep meh awake and functioning. ;) ;D

i just discovered it for myself gitZ--might not work sa uban. Most of my co-MDs use caffeine (energy drinks and coffee). ::)
popsicles have sugar to feed my brain and keep meh up..then the cold peps meh up too. ;) :D :)
Kung duka nah kaayo ko when driving, i usually have some ice chips pra dli katulog mgdrive pod. 8)

I make do with what I have. even the most luxurious castle in the world can be a hindrance in educating ones self about what's going on with the rest of the world. don't get me wrong......... I totally enjoy the serenity of being by myself.......... but sometimes, I wonder what I'm missing.......... the sweet caress of another person.......... the smile and the look that's meant only for me..........the warmth of the hand that I can be holding while driving or walking along the beach or lounging on the couch watching a good flick.......... things like that. ;) :) 8)

Heather's Story
You wouldn't expect a woman who passionately studied art at school to become a qualified Civil Engineer.
But that's exactly what you can expect from Heather Parry.
She's a woman of many talents who takes multitasking to a whole new level; she's a devoted mother, accredited Pony Club Instructor and keen renovator, who breeds and trains horses and regularly musters cattle for friends.
Heather is also the Project Manager for Leighton Contractors at the $299 million Dawson North Mine Project in Central Queensland, where she's accountable for a safe, efficient, on-budget mining operation.
Throughout school Heather's mother warned her about the lack of jobs in the artistic field. But for a woman who can think creatively, there are plenty of jobs in Australia's mining industry.
As Project Manager, Heather's role is a crucial one that entails supervising a multidisciplinary project team of over 150 personnel.
What she accomplished last year was a work of art, as constant floods wreaked havoc throughout the state. "I really did wonder, how am I going to lead my group out of this one?" she admits.
But with that imaginative head on her shoulders, Heather and her team managed to find the right solutions and strategies to get through those difficult times.
Heather's story started from a humble upbringing. Originally from NSW, Heather was raised by her mum, as one of four kids. She went on to complete a Bachelor of Civil Engineering at the University of Newcastle and worked in construction before moving to Queensland. After completing several construction projects for mine sites, she secured a job in mining because, she says, "mining is a rare industry that allows professionals to live in the bush and lead a really fulfilling career".
Heather now actively campaigns for the recruitment and retention of women in the resources sector, with her operation boasting almost 20 per cent women in operator roles and 30 per cent women on the project team.
She's particularly excited about creating family-friendly roles available for stay-at-home mums who have kids at school, and sees these women as potentially being "an enormous asset" to her team.
Over the next 10 years it will be vital to encourage women to enter and remain in the mining sector, as literally thousands of people are required to support the expansion of the mining industry in Queensland.
In fact, the Queensland Resources Council is actively looking to "increase the proportion of women as operators, engineers, geologists and senior management".
"It's definitely a passion of mine to enable women to get into the mining industry," Heather says. "There's a wide spectrum of jobs available that would suit women who are either unemployed or underemployed."
It's this kind of attitude that won Heather the Queensland Resources Award for Women.
But Heather doesn't think of herself as a role model for women, she just gets on with life - whether she's instructing her staff at the mine or a horse at her daughter's Pony Club.
"Horses are good teachers for management because if you're not fair to a horse it responds badly, and it's the same with management."
Heather may not exactly be a horse whisperer, but her voice in the mining industry can be heard loud and clear.
And Heather Parry is just one of many women trailblazing a path for the Australian women who are destined to become leaders in our mining industry.

Plumbers and gasfitters are in high demand throughout Australia, both in the resources industry and construction sector. Anyone with training in plumbing has the opportunity for a diverse career across a broad section of industries in every location in the nation.
Ross Ingham, aged 31, became a plumber and gasfitter after doing a plumbing apprenticeship. As a mature-aged student, he had a few adjustments to make but graduated with a Certificate III in Plumbing. He was a finalist in the ACT Training Awards and now works with his own plumbing apprentice.
“Doing an apprenticeship is rewarding or beyond rewarding,” Ross says.
“The rewards at the end are overwhelming.”
How you can become a plumber
The best way to find information about becoming a plumber and starting a plumbing career is to visit the Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association website. You’ll find excellent information about career pathways and apprenticeships. If you’re in Western Australia, MPA Skills is an RTO (registered training organisation) focused on building successful plumbers and painters.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has reformed the 476 visa scheme resulting in a 900% increase in the number of overseas graduates eligible to work in Australia.
What is the 476 visa?
The 476 visa is designed for engineering graduates who obtained a tertiary engineering degree to live and work in Australia for up to 18 months. Applicants have to be younger than 31 years of age. [Like me.] ;D
Prior to the reforms, the list of approved institutions was quite short with only 108 institutions listed. Now the list recognises all universities accredited by Engineers Australia, the peak body responsible for assessing skilled migration in the engineering sector.
Industry supports change
To give some perspective to this change, Industry association, Consult Australia, says the number of approved universities in the USA has jumped from 16 to 386.
Megan Motto, CEO of Consult Australia, explains the significance of the decision to expand the list of approved institutions on the engineering skills shortage in Australia.
“By extrapolating the trends for visa holders of Britain, the US, South Africa, Canada and Malaysia, we predict the permanent engineering workforce will be boosted by a minimum of four per cent.”
“The reality is that our engineering industry desperately needs graduates to progress through the seniority ranks in Australia to subsidise the shortage of local engineers.”
It’s expected regional areas will benefit from these changes including mining, energy and oil and gas operations. As the 476 visa can be converted to a general skilled migration, the reforms are expected to have a long-term impact on the engineering workforce.
What this means for jobseekers
If you’re a young, qualified engineer, it’s just become easier to work in Australia. As the engineering skills shortage continues to plague the Australian resources industry, government, industry, and industry associations are working together to bring more qualified people into the Australian workforce. Employers in the mining industry, oil companies and energy businesses are all experiencing a severe shortage of engineers. Now is a great time for young engineers to consider an engineering job in Australia.

A new report from Cordell Information and the Housing Industry Association (HIA) shows civil engineering and mining projects dominate the Australian construction industry. The annual Housing Industry Association-Cordell Construction 100 provides data on the largest 100 companies working in engineering construction and non-residential building sectors. It’s no surprise resources projects dominate the 2012 findings.
Harley Dale, the Chief Economist for HIA, said projects for the resources industry boosted the construction industry helping to influence an 18.1% increase in 2011/2012. Many of the top construction companies in Australia enjoyed work related to mining construction.
“Australia’s largest 100 construction contractors and non-residential builders were awarded contracts for construction work worth $70.9 billion in 2011/12. This result represents 57 per cent of the total value of construction work commenced,” explained Mr. Dale.
“The common thread across all companies at the top of the Construction 100 list is a strong presence in the mining, civil engineering, and community construction sectors, with John Holland Group this year standing out from the pack in terms of this diversification.”

Chief Economist Peter Jones states that the number of jobs in the industry grew by 1.5% seasonally from August, building on the positive trend over the year. The latest figures now reveal over one million people – 1,028,500 to be exact – are currently employed in the sector.
“The welcome growth confirms the need for the government to prioritise support for employers in established industries which are performing in their rebalancing of funding for skills training,” he said.
“Overall, industry employment is being driven by the recovery in residential building and before the full impact of the downturn in mining related engineering construction takes effect.”
By far, New South Wales has performed the strongest with industry employment growth through the year to August up by 29,000 or 10%. As a result, the state has been as labelled an emerging ‘powerhouse’ in building and construction.
A strong upturn in residential building and improved sentiments in commercial building have been identified as the key drivers of the industry’s revival. Residential building and non-residential building (offices, shops, hotels, factors, and the like) are seen as crucial to economic growth.
The Sunshine Coast has emerged as Queensland’s new hot spot for construction activity, scoring an impressive 70.3 on a scale of 0 to 100 on an index of builder sentiment.
