omg--it's fun! I remember in Manga years ago--wlay lingaw ang mga batan-on nah guys didto, and they will group themselves and make harana sa mga gurls during summer nights with matching dedications. too bad i was still a kiddo back then, but my 3 Atehs experienced and enjoyed it much. ;) ;D ;D

I have a cousin named "Edward". he resembles pops fernandez ex-husband........ but darker. he sings and play base guitar and keyboard with his parents on their band. he's one of the nicest guys I know. that's why it really ticked me off >:( >:( when his wife (a pinay) screwed around on him. but he remarried again last year to another pinay. :)

seasonal mexican dish........... usually, made during Christmas season. it's made of minced and seasoned meat (chicken, pork, or beef) packed in masa (cornmeal dough), wrapped in corn husks, and steamed. some are spicy. but the one I brought to mikey is steamed in banana leaf (I guess, pinoy style).
sarap 'yon gitz. the next time I go visit the p.i., and it's ok to carry food, I'll bring you some. just remind me! :) 8)

I just doing it on my own in my own way......... like skydiving, scuba-diving, spelunking, paintball/airsoft, or just plain hitting the gym type of person......... I still run every now and then, but not so much since time don't really permit me nowadays. ;) :) 8)

It's an amazing place--not so much with technology but with nature--beaches, caves and sceneries. Sure, i can play host to you together with the rest of us here..that is when we happen to be home when u'll visit the Phils. 8) U have relatives somwhere??

yeah, I've seen and read everything that roger posted. love the place.......... lots of trees and big-eyed nocturnal critters..........the kind of place I'd love to spend a whole lot of time in. I should've been a forest ranger. FPJ is one of my fave pinoy actors.......... and I love watching his really old movies. it's not just because of him but because of the location that they shot the film in. it's like a place where time forgot. sometimes, I even imagine myself being back in that era.......... back in the 40s and 50s. I guess that's why I love watching movies and the music from the 40s and 50s. ;) :) 8)

swing and salsa......... never went to class. learned it through application. had some puerto rican friends and dated one when I was stationed in Germany, so I learned a bit from them. and dated a couple of hispanic girls here in LA, so, learned from them, too. but, it's been so long since I've re-applied what I learned........... so, a bit rusty now. that's why you should teach me some moves some time. ;) :) 8)

I'm just being honest :). I've learned from experience that deviating from the truth will only make any situation worse. I've learned that when it comes to women, it's better to tell the truth and suffer the consequences........... than to fib and not be forgiven. of course answering a woman's inquiry, "do I look fat?", is a different story. hehehe. ;D so, you ask me a straight question............ I'll give you a straight answer. ;) :) 8)

I've remember this ad from years back. the targets are seniors. I think the company is "lifeline". the product is something they hang on the neck, like a necklace, that the senior would press a button to alarm the company that they are incapacitated and need help. :)

yep--most seniors in assisted living facilities and homes have LifeLine, and pressing the button is almost like calling 911 (though not quite) if somthing happens. it's cool. 8)

swing and salsa......... never went to class. learned it through application. had some puerto rican friends and dated one when I was stationed in Germany, so I learned a bit from them. and dated a couple of hispanic girls here in LA, so, learned from them, too. but, it's been so long since I've re-applied what I learned........... so, a bit rusty now. that's why you should teach me some moves some time. ;) :) 8)

ok.......... traditional pinoy courtship. we do it the other way around here. the way we do it is the guy and the girl goes out on dates and gets to know each other first. once, they're comfortable being together........... that's just about the time to be introduced to the parents. ;) :) 8)

combat? yeah, several times.......... somalia, bosnia, haiti, afghanistan, iraq (2x). and these are just deployments. not counting the times we were engaged by enemy combatants while we were on patrol or on other missions. the scary feeling happens after the fact......... no time to really feel fear as it happens, especially when rounds are whizzing next to you. besides, training always kicks in. there was a time in iraq when my team and I were pinned down by snipers and enemy fighters.......... in a cemetery. we started joking about it......... that we definitely are in the right place but the wrong time........ laughter sure boosted our morale as we wait for extraction and reinforcement from the rest of our unit. ;) :) 8)

initially, I planned on going there that month. but, a close relative wants to have a family reunion this December. so, most of everyone in our family from all over the globe are going to the p.i. besides, it's a request by the general........in lieu of Christmas and birthday celebration. ;) :) 8)

The Municipality of Lucban (Filipino: Bayan ng Lucban) is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Quezon, Philippines. According to the 2007 census, it has a population of 45,616 people[1]. It rests at the foot of the prestigious Mt. Banahaw.
Lucban is famous around the world for the annual Pahiyas Festival which is held every May 15 in honor of the patron saint of harvest, Isidore the Laborer the Farmer.
History
Legend has it that the town derived its name from Lucban or Pomelo fruit tree. Three hunters from Majayjay, Laguna named Marcos Tigla, Luis Gumba and Lucas Manawa lost their way at the foot of Mount Banahaw following the trail of some wild animals. Resting under a tree, they saw a black crow or "uwak" up on a tree, and believing this to be a bad omen, they moved to another location and rested once more. While resting under a large shady pomelo or lucban tree, the trio were attracted to a couple of kingfishers (salaksak) singing. Fascinated by the beautiful color and lovely rhythmic chirps of the birds, the superstitious hunters took the incident as a sign of good fortune and decided to settle in the place and named it "Lucban." The people of Lucban accepted the story as true. Today Lucban is a thriving community surrounded by its pristine environment and retaining its historic beauty.
Pahiyas Festival
Lucban celebrates the Pahiyas Festival every May 15 in honor of the patron saint of farmers, St. Isidore. This festival showcases a street of houses which are adorned with fruits, vegetables, agricultural products, handicrafts and kiping, a rice-made decoration, which afterwards can be eaten grilled or fried. The houses are judged and the best one is proclaimed the winner. Every year, tourists roam the municipality to witness the decoration of houses.
Once had a gf from that place. Like going to Marinduque, took a bus at Pasay City terminal bound for Lucena City [LC]. From LC took a jeepney to Lucban.
Many houses there were built during the Spanish era. Made of white cement(?) and very sturdee. Otherwise, wouldn't survive long. Similar to the Mexican abode. Some have roof gardens (hehehe). Ie, weeds, wildflowers, whatever (even bonsai-like small trees) have taken roots on the roof. Like Baguio, quite cool there. Must have high elevation. Yes, a pristine environment and retaining its historic beauty. Water supply came from the mountain and continuously flowed. No need to pump.
Was a guest at gf's house. Relics were spread everywhere. Even a lifesize statue of Christ without nose was in the sala. Hehehe. ;) Yeah, really scary place. Slept on bed in the guest room. In the middle of the night, a torrential downpour. Water was dripping down my bed. Hehehe. Woke up and look for my gf. Found her sleeping on the floor in another room with her younger siblings. Allowed me to sleep with them next to her. Wouldn't dare go beyond wrapping my arm around her waist. No. Not in her place.
But night onwards she was sleeping with me in the guest room. ‘coz I was afraid of the ghosts that haunted the house. Yeah, situation was reversed. ;D ;) Lady protecting the “Knight in Shining Armour” from the evil spirits that abound. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D She grew up there and was unafraid of them. Hehehe. :) ;) Bed was large enough for both of us. Stayed there for the long weekend during Holy Week.
Was a student nurse. Partially supported her with her schooling. Later, went to USA. Similar story. This one, married a puti. Hehehe. Ay, nako! malas tlg ako sa babae. :) ;)
Anyway, this was 30+ yrs ago. Dunno what it is there now.

Real, Ma’am Minnie Villamor - del Rosario, Bohol National High School (BNHS) faculty members, and myself were the judges in the elimination round of the Miss Alturas Campus Personality held at the residence of Sir Marlito Uy (Alturas Group of Companies’ general manager) in Booy way back 1992. Vanessa Joyce “Bambi” Matuod Evardone, the fifth child (in the brood of seven) of Francisco M. Evardone, retired DILG Provincial Director, and Hospicia C. Matuod, who’s Master Teacher II and OIC-school principal of Manga Elementary School, is indisputably one of the pride of Manga District, Tagbilaran and the entire province, as well. How she “gracefully” made her way to the ladder of success is truly inspiring, something worthy of emulation, but for sure, nobody can measure up to her feat. Well, not in the next 25 or 50 years, I believe.
Let’s start with her highly - impressive scholastic background. She was class salutatorian of Manga Elementary School in 1990. Her secondary education at BNHS was a major contributing factor to her long list of achievements. Bambi was class spelling bee and received the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Award in 1990. In 1994, she was class valedictorian of BNHS and recipient of the Duty Medal Award, Philippine Insular Life Award and Philippine Senate Award.
She earned her degree in Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology at Southwestern University (SWU) in 1998, magna cum laude, was conferred the Most Outstanding Graduate of SWU citation and another special award for garnering the highest grade point average (GPA) of the entire graduating class of 1998. From 1994 to 1998, she was consistently No. 1 in the dean’s list, a member of the team that grabbed the championship plum of the Junior Chemical Society Quizbowl in 1995. Her leadership potentials were harnessed and recognized when she was elected president of the Medtech interns in 1998 and vice-president of the Cebu Blood Donors’ Society (1997-98). Her diligence and focus on her studies paid off as she was university scholar from 1998 to 2002, always occupying the top spot (No. 1) in the dean’s list and was cited as most outstanding in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, all nerve-wracking and mind-boggling subjects dreaded by most students. The hardest part in medical school? The exams, she quipped. As it was just like in high school when students were in block sections. In medical school, there’s time to be serious and time to play. While studying in Cebu, Bambi, her brother Doydee and her sister Wowie did the laundry and cooked meals, as they were taught at home. Though some of her classmates found it rather incredible, internship was physically overwhelming as expected. Imagine 32 hours hospital duty, 48 hours even! They say “sleeping is a luxury in medicine.” It’s true, but then people studying medicine belong to the age bracket who won’t need growth hormones (from sleep) because the growing process has long ceased (quite interesting). Her secret in school: “Intelligence plus diligence wrapped in prayers.”
Beauty and brains seldom go together. But in the case of Bambi, she is one of the rare species who is so fortunate to have the best of worlds. Her first beauty title was BNHS Binibining Agham, followed by the Binibining Agham – Bohol, which later paved the way to her winning the Region VII Binibining Agham ’92, Miss Alturas Campus Personality ’92, Mutya sa Tagbilaran ’94; Miss Bohol Sandugo ’94; Miss Medical Technology and Miss Southwestern University “96, SWU Golden Jubilee Queen and San Miguel Corporation (Mandaue) Muse ’97.
Having harmony is the family is very important to the Evardones. They also share in the success of each family member. Bambi happily recounts sweet memories of her childhood. There’s a two-year gap between each sibling, so they could divide into two (2) teams already to play “salangkati”(?) without having to import additional players and the choir’s complete during Christmas when they would go caroling. They shared the household chores; they took turns in washing the dishes and cooking rice. Bambi, who belonged to the younger half of the family, swept the kitchen, while the older siblings had bigger parts to clean proportionately. Since their mother had her hands full with schoolwork, the older siblings taught the younger ones how to do math and how to deal with grammar. When both parents would go to Cebu for something on particular occasions, everybody will then be excited because each of them would get a coloring and rhyme book as “pasalubong.”
As Bambi had shared, her parents’ upbringing and methods of discipline were varied: whipping with one (1) or two (2) coconut midribs, rubber sandals (chinelas), leather belts, “lusi” (pinched especially over the inguinal area) or just sleep-inducing litany (I experienced all of that, too!). As kids, they were not allowed too much television – TV viewing was only one hour a day, from six (6) to seven (7) in the evening during school days, and limited only to Newswatch, instead of Mickey Mouse and other cartoons. Would you believe their childhood TV idols were Harry Gasser and Cathy Santillan-Veloso, newscasters of RPN-9? A constant reminder was posted in bold letters near the TV which says: “NO TELEVIEWING AFTER 7PM. TV IS ONLY GOOD FOR NEWS WATCHING. IF YOU HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO, READ. IF YOU’RE DONE STUDYING, SLEEP.
This brilliant and charming lady physician met Dr. Carlito B. Astillero II, the love of her life, in medical school, while she was in her first year and he, in third year. According to her, it was his (future husband’s) close friend who courted her. This writer hadn’t a chance to ask what exactly transpired, but Carlito started courting Bambi during her third year. As she wasn’t the type to give up her pursuit for academic supremacy even under threat of macho stare, Bambi turned him down twice, but Carlito’s persistence must have smitten this beauty queen from Manga who finally opened her heart (for a one-on-one relationship) during her fourth year – internship – when she didn’t have to worry a lot about grades… Not many people know that Bambi and Carlito permanently sealed their union last April 11, 2005 at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph the Worker. By the last week of November, Carlito, after his three and a half-year residency training in general surgery at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, will leave for the United States to join Bambi, now on her first-year residency training in internal medicine at the Caritas Carney Hospital-Tafts University in Boston, Massachusetts and will hopefully specialize in nephrology or cardiology in the future…and up to now, her favorite line is still – “there’s no pillow so soft than a clear conscience.” How true!

Filipinos abroad hire Cupids to serenade loved ones back home

MANILA, Philippines — Angelica Nino, a 22-year-old manager of a Manila restaurant, was preparing to assign shifts to her crew last week when she got a big surprise from her Filipino boyfriend who has been in Italy for a year on business.
To mark their first anniversary as a couple and as an early Valentine’s Day gift, he sent over a singer and a guitar player to serenade her and read out his love letter.
This scene will be played out Thursday in restaurants, offices and homes across the Philippines on Valentine’s Day.
With nearly 10 percent of the country’s 94 million people working abroad, clearly there was room for someone to play Cupid between long-distance lovers. And then was born a unique surprise serenade service, which includes love songs, a cuddly teddy and a video recording of the romance-by-proxy event that is shipped to the client abroad. To immortalize their love, the video is also posted on YouTube.
At the Yoshinoya restaurant, a video camera recorded the teary-eyed Nino listening to the love songs by the rental Cupids while hugging the teddy bear gift. Smiling co-workers — who were in on the surprise — and guests watched as Thor, a professional singer, performed.
The unique service was started by in 2010 by Jason dela Rosa, a former recording studio producer who said it is the first and only professional surprise serenade service in the country. The bulk of his clients are homesick and love struck Filipinos overseas who want to send their love to spouses, girlfriends and boyfriends from thousands of miles away.
“So even if you are overseas, and you send a serenade to your loved ones in the Philippines, you will get to experience what they experienced via the video,” said Jason dela Rosa, a former recording studio producer who started the serenade service in 2010.
It is not unlike having flowers delivered to your loved one, but with the added zing of a song.
He said he and his business partner wanted to give the “singing telegram” that was popular in the U.S. a more Filipino character, so they called their company Harana, or serenade in the local Tagalog language.
Harana is a dying Philippine courtship tradition in which a boy courting a girl goes to her house in the evening with a guitar player and singer in tow. They would sing love songs until the girl being wooed looks out the window or invites them in to meet her parents.
“Harana’s effect is different because harana is such a cultural thing for us, but we try to make it modern, with modern songs,” dela Rosa said.
Instead of just sending a plain message, “there is romance, there is a lot effort put into the event organizing, and the most we wanted to do is to record everything on video,” he added.
When the company was started, dela Rosa said, no one else in the world offered such a service, though similar services are available today in the U.S., Bolivia and Australia. But its popularity in the Philippines is more telling because no other countries have such a high percentage of people who work abroad, mostly in service, medical and shipping industries.
Gloria Guevara, a 57-year-old accountant whose seafarer husband Eduardo is sailing in South America, said she was touched when she was serenaded on their wedding anniversary in her office in December. Her officemates were cheering, and some, like her, became misty-eyed.
“It really came as a surprise,” Guevara said. “Often he would send flowers or send money to my daughter for our lunch out, but for this anniversary it was a little different.”
She said Filipino families with members abroad have “so many things we miss out on, but you can try to make up for it by such gestures.”
The modern take on the traditional serenade does not come cheap. The fee for a basic package — including two to three songs by a professional singer, a personal message read with background guitar music, a teddy bear, and a CD containing a video and photos of the event — is 7,000 pesos ($170), which is equivalent to a quarter of the monthly wages of a restaurant manager like Nino. [peanuts for a FIFO worker in Australia] :) ;) Dela Rosa said the price could go higher if the client requests a top-ranked singer or other extras.
The service is nationwide, tapping a network of some 140 singers and guitar players in different cities.
Love transcends the distance, “and Harana makes it possible,” says the company’s website.
Nino couldn’t agree more.
“I salute men who still practice Harana, because it’s classic and it’s very flattering for a woman,” she said.
