TRAVEL PHILIPPINES / Camiguin, your island of imagination
« on: June 04, 2014, 06:33:24 AM »
Summer Gimik in Camiguin

Philippines has 7, 107 islands and it's hard for one to stand out. However, the small island of Camiguin manages to distinguish itself as a tourist destination.

My last hurrah for summer 2014, I’d visited Camiguin to relax and feel the power of nature. For the nth time, I still love Camiguin. The place hasn’t changed; still imposing and inviting. It is still uncorrupted by large numbers of tourists.

From Jagna port, I took the OceanJet (700 one way ticket, leaving for Cagayan de Oro City, daily at 1 p.m. via Benoni, Camiguin). From Benoni to Mambajao, Camiguin’s capital, it will take you for 30 minutes. Take a motorela and pay 60-100 pesos.

Interesting places to see:

Sto. Nino Cold Spring-  You have to leave the main ring road in the village of Looc, near Catarman on the South-West side of the island. From the main road, it's about 2 km into the forest before you reach the resort area. The water is literally icy! The place has cottage and salbabida for rent. Fee: 30 pesos for adult.

Ardent Hot Spring- It is 4 km  from the national highway in Agoho and Yumbing, in the mountainside of the famous Hibok - Hibok Volcano. The water comes right out of the forest with a temperature of just above 40°C. It has three pools (first pool has 40°C, second pool has 35°C and other small pools). Entrance Fee: 30 pesos

Bura Soda Spring-  Located in Bura, Catarman, it is the only in the country where you can swim to a pool of soda water. beautiful park between green hills. In the background Mount Hibok-Hibok dominates the skyline.Inside the park you find a vast array of flowers and plants. The single large pool is divided into two sections by some sort of walkway, the shallow section and the deeper portion.  Yes, you can drink from a real soda water fountain!  Entrance Fee: 30 pesos

White Island- It is a C - shaped, huge sand bar which changes its shape and size with the season. There are no trees or anything else on White Island which could give you some shadow and protection from the sun.  Visit the white island early, 5:00 am and come back at 8:00 am to avoid the hot sun at noon. The trip to White Island cost 400 per boat, not per person.

That's me wearing the Mikey Gatal Shirt

There’re no lansones fruits during May. ?

Islanders are extremely warm and friendly. It’s zero crime rate in Camiguin.

Camiguin, the island of your imagination!!

Sitti conquers the Big Apple
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Philippines’ bossa nova queen Sitti (Navarro), currently on a US concert tour, can hardly wait for the New York City leg of her tour. “Not only because it’s her first time to perform in the Big Apple,” said Funfare’s New York correspondent Edmund Silvestre (of The Filipino Reporter), “but also because she will be accompanied by an international band who has played for the likes of Tony Bennett, Sergio Mendes, Gloria Gaynor, Eddie Murphy, Freddie Jackson, Bill Withers and Cuba Gooding & The Main Ingredient, plus Brazil’s superstars Beth Carvalho, Zeze Motta and Jair Rodrigues.”

Playing for Sitti is the renowned band of jazz producer Clyde Bullard, producer of FlushingTown Hall’s Jazz Live! series since 1998 and principal bassist for the Boys Choir of Harlem (both in New York) for over 17 years now. He has performed in over 25 Broadway and off-Broadway shows (including A Chorus Line and Two Gentlemen of Verona) and has produced large-scale productions in the US and other countries.

Edmund happily reported that Sitti in the City will be staged on Sept. 5 (at 7 p.m.) at the Rebel Club at 251 West 30th Street (between 7th and 8th avenues). Rebel Club, one of Manhattan’s newest and trendiest dance, lounge and live music venues, is located one block from Madison Square Garden.

AAR Productions, producer of Sitti in the City, was quoted by Edmund as saying that putting Sitti and Clyde Bullard together in New York City’s hottest music spot is a major event that should not be missed by fans of Brazilian music, particularly bossa nova.

“I’m really thrilled about the New York show because I will be performing with some of the world’s best musicians,” the lovely singer known for her soothing voice, told Funfare in a brief phone chat. “It will be an honor to be added to the roster of performers this group has accompanied over the years.”

Joining Clyde Bullard are Meia Noite (percussionist of Sergio Mendes), Sly Scott (saxophone and flute), Ian James MacDonald (accordion), Gil Olizeira (drums), Ron Jackson (guitar), and Miho Nobuzane (keyboard).

Dr. Ramon Benito, a respected Filipino-American New York dentist dubbed “The Singing Dentist,” and upcoming singer Caryl Kristen Dizon, a multi-talented performer and Ivy Leaguer, will be the opening acts.

Sitti, whose 2006 album, Cafe Bossa, is a certified double platinum, is known for the hits Tattooed On My Mind, Girl From Ipanema, At 17 and Samba Song, to name a few. She was recently named Female Recording Artist of the Year by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation.

(Note: According to Edmund, for tickets to Sitti in the City, priced at $40 for SRO, call 732-3190562, 201-9189433, 848-4676505, 908-9069788, 917-6912335, 201-9824520 or 917-4503015. Members of the audience 18 and below must have IDs to party; and must be 21 above to be allowed to drink.)

Special day for Thalia fans

Last Aug. 26 was very special to Thalia and her fans.

“It was her 36th birthday,” said Funfare contributor Leo Udtohan of Tagbilaran, Bohol, who filed this brief report:

The Thalia mania is still high. Her first Maria telenovela, Marimar, was recently adapted by GMA with Marian Rivera in the title role while ABS-CBN did a Tagalized version of Rosalinda.

In 2000, Thalia married Tommy Mottola, 59, the ex-husband of Mariah Carey, and she became a mother for the first time.

Her singing career continues though she’s no longer doing telenovelas. Recently she released her 14th album, Lunada, co-produced with old friend Emilio Estefan. It features 11 cuts, a mix of old (Insensible or Insensitive) and new (Bendita, Blessed), dedicated to nine-month-old Sabrina Sakae.

The Mottola couple used to own a mansion on StarIsland, next door to the Estefans. They now call New York home.

Asked how she finds being a mother, Thalia said, “It’s a blessing. This is the best time of my life. She is so healthy, such a lovely child, wanting to walk, moving around constantly. She definitely knows what she wants — the boss of the house!’’

Thalia said that Tommy is a wonderful father. “He sings to her, feeds her, talks to her, tells her stories.’’
What’s up?
