Good Nutrition is all about getting the food your body needs for growth, maintenance and repair.

So the bottom line - the amount and types of food you eat will have a direct effect on your health and fitness.

You are probably no stranger to the fact that a balanced diet can lead to a healthier lifestyle. But do you know what makes up a balanced diet in the first place? What to eat and when? When not to eat and why?

The basics of good nutrition include the following :

    * Your main source of calories should be complex carbohydrates.
       
    * Excess saturated fat increases the risk of disease.
       
    * Proteins are the building blocks for the body.
       
    * Fibre adds bulk to food and helps good digestion.
       
    * Your body needs vitamins and minerals in correct amounts.
       
    * Water is an essential part of a healthy diet.
       

If you can get your nutrition right, then chances are your living a healthy life in a healthy body - there is no point spending hours in the gym if you then simply eat processed microwave meals.

Natural fresh foods that come from the ground or the trees are what you want to eat - foods out of plastic containers that are laced with preservatives should be avoided.

Olive Oil

Olive oil reduces your risk of heart disease by lowering your LDL cholesterol levels. Choose olive oil for cooking, or make a nice dip for whole grain bread by pouring a bit of olive oil in a small bowl and add a bit of balsamic vinegar and a sprinkle of oregano.
