Buy Alkaline Water?

Would You Actually Buy Alkaline Water?   by Gordon Hall

Before you buy alkaline water, you should know the facts. Companies that sell the beverages make "claims". The question is whether or not the claims are justified.

The claims say that our bodies are in an acidic state due to the foods we choose to eat and the beverages we choose to drink. Chemists and doctors disagree. They say the body has unique mechanisms in place to balance the acidity or the alkalinity of the foods we eat.

People who suffer from chronic heartburn or acid reflux go to great efforts to neutralize stomach acid. That is what they have been told to do. There is reason to believe that the body reacts to those efforts by producing more stomach acid. So, while an antacid might provide temporary relief from heartburn, it makes the problem worse in the long run.

The next time you have heartburn, try taking a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. I know a man who was diagnosed with acid reflux years ago. His doctors prescribe proton pump inhibitors. Due to a job change, he was unable to afford the medications for several months. So, he started looking for an alternative. He found numerous recommendations for the apple cider vinegar. Not only did the vinegar relieve his heartburn, he is convinced it cured his acid reflux.

So if you wanted to buy alkaline water, because you have chronic heartburn or acid reflux, try the vinegar. Personally, I have never suffered from the problem, but it seems to be a common one. Doctors agree that it is at least partially caused by stress.

Other claims concerning the benefits of consuming more alkaline-rich foods or beverages are completely outrageous. Companies should be prohibited from making the claims.

If you want to buy alkaline water, because you have heard it is a cure for osteoporosis or even cancer, you should know that there is absolutely no proof that it works. When it comes to osteoporosis, there is actually proof that it does not work.

The salespeople say that the waters have antioxidant activity. Antioxidants are nutrients. Most of them are found in brightly colored fruits, vegetables, spices and other plants.

The minerals present in springs and groundwater are responsible for the pH level. Those minerals are not believed to have antioxidant activity.

Chemists have said that ionizing water, which is what the home systems do, would actually cause the water to become an oxidant, not an antioxidant.

Every claim that the salespeople make can be disputed by knowledgeable scientists. Several of them have written blogs on the subject to help people learn the truth.

Home ionizers are not purifiers. They will not remove hazardous chemicals like chlorine or the cancer-causing THMs. Home water purifiers are more affordable than ionizers and are actually a worthwhile investment. Just be sure to read the product performance data before you buy a purifier. The data will reveal whether or not the company claims are justified.

Hopefully you understand that there is no reason to buy alkaline water. It is actually a waste of money.
