‘inappropriate’ breast cancer awareness t-shirts
Rick Chandler
Cheerleaders at Gilbert High School in Gilbert, Ariz., had a great idea: Make up some pink breast cancer awareness t-shirts and sell them at the next high school football game, the money going to breast cancer research. Only one problem: when school administrators saw the shirts, they banned them, saying that the slogan was too racy. The slogan: Feel for lumps, save your bumps. Shocking! Why, I do believe I have the vapors. From the Arizona Republic:
The “Feel for lumps, save your bumps” slogan on the back of the shirt was originally bought for the 56 freshman, junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders to wear during two home football games. The girls planned to collect money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, while wearing the shirts.
However, Gilbert High Principal J. Charles Santa Cruz said he took exception to the slogan and that the shirts were never approved by administration. He told Gayleen Skowronek, the cheer booster club president, last Friday the shirts were not allowed on campus.
Boooo, BOOOOO, Booooooo! … oh, sorry.
The joke’s on the school administration, however, because publicity from the controversy has made the shirts more popular than ever. The Gilbert cheerleaders have received orders for the shirts from across the nation, and even from as far as the United Arab Emirates.
Yes, principal Santa Cruz, you must now come to grips with the fact that an Arab Middle Eastern nation is less prudish and repressive than your school.
