Christine Mae Maribao celebrated her birthday with a bang at Elevate Lounge on November 18, 2011, across from Takami Restaurant on the 21st floor of a downtown high rise, has 6000 sq ft of dance and lounge space in one big open area. Retractable glass walls (sliding doors) open to the outdoor lounge with a south-west view over downtown from Wilshire. The dance floor is relatively small compared to the amount of space. Most of the seating is reserved for bottle service, which is becoming typical in LA clubs, so it often sits empty while everyone stands around.

The line for the club forms downstairs in front of the building.

The crowd is a mixture of locals and tourists, all ethnicities and ages from 20s to 40s, with the crowd averaging younger as it gets later and the dinner crowd goes home. A bachelorette party had women outnumbering men 3 to one on the dance floor on the Saturday night I was there.







The management bases the fullness of the house on when the dance floor is packed, not when the club is full, so you may wait an hour in line when the lounge area is half empty because there's no room on the dance floor.

There are many complaints about the door policy at Elevate, where bouncers pick and choose who gets in regardless of your position in line.





People coming across after dinner at Takami get priority over the line of people waiting downstairs, but you have to buy a full dinner, not just hang out at the Takami bar, to get the cover charge waived, and Takami patrons are not guaranteed entry into Elevate.

They play the same type of music every night, which is a mix of techno, hip hop and old school. It started out pretty danceable, but got less interesting as the evening wore on. I wondered if it was a deliberate ploy to thin out the dance floor and get people to go drink.

There is no food served at elevate, but if you're hungry before midnight (sometimes they close earlier), you can step across the hall for a snack at Takami.





Beer prices are among the highest in the neighborhood, but cocktails are about average and reasonably strong.

The bar closes at 2 am, but the club stays open until 2:30 or 3 am so that everyone is not swamping the valet at once.
