Manny Pacquiao defeated Chris Algieri on Sunday, and he wasted little time addressing a possible showdown with Floyd Mayweather. “I think it’s time to say something,” Pacquiao said at a post-fight news conference. “The fans deserve that fight. It’s time to make that fight happen.”
The fight may or may not happen, but Mayweather took a jab at Pacquiao on Wednesday, posting a video to Instagram showing the Filipino champ getting repeatedly knocked out. The video uses Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” as a soundtrack, just to get some extra taunting in.
Is this another sign that the fight, for which boxing fans have spent years clamoring, is inching closer to becoming a reality? It certainly seems like an extended form of pre-match ill will, and Mayweather is not shy about getting attention for his fights.
Of course, this is one fight that wouldn’t need any manufactured hype. The only question could be whether Jerry Jones sells all 100,000-plus seats at his stadium for it.
But, following on the heels of reports that Mayweather is asking for a rematch clause in any contract to fight Pacquiao, the Instagram post gives boxing fans a little more reason to get excited.
