I was thinking about sea nymphs -- mermaids. In Greek mythology, they’re referred to as water goddesses.

Reminded me of a short story in hi-sch literature. A sea nymph who became human at night and would spend the whole evening along the beach. Met this prince who lived in a castle by the sea. Fell in love. That broke the spell. She became a mere mortal. And they lived happily ever after. :) ;)
