MILF returns 16 weapons taken from fallen SAF troopers

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has returned 16 weapons its fighters seized from Philippine National Police–Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) troopers during a clash in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last January 25.

Return policy

MILF chief peace negotiator Mohagher Iqbal earlier told the Senate in a letter that the group will return the policemen's weapons, composed of several high-grade firearms.

Iqbal led the weapons turnover to Government Peace Panel chair Miriam Coronel-Ferrer at Camp Siongco in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao.

Among the surrendered arms were 9 M4 carbines and a squad automatic weapon.

Iqbal congratulated the government and MILF ceasefire committees for successfully retrieving the firearms. He also assured the public that the MILF leadership is "in full control of its forces."

Iqbal added that the MILF is "willing to travel the extra mile for the peace process to succeed."

Meanwhile, Ferrer thanked all those who helped retrieve the fallen SAF troopers' weapons. She said that the government, like the MILF, still believes in the peace process despite the tragedy in Mamsapano.

Among those seen attending the turnover rites were Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Governor Mujiv Hataman, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr., and Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Seretary Teresita Deles.

BIFF also has SAF weapons

There are also several weapons from fallen SAF troopers in the possession of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).

In an earlier report, BIFF spokesperson Abu Missry Mama was asked if they would follow the MILF's lead in returning the weapons they took, the BIFF. The BIFF official had said, "Hindi naman kami baliw na ibabalik namin 'yung na-recover namin sa kaaway namin."

When asked if BIFF fighters were using the weapons seized from the fallen PNP-SAF cops, he had likewise replied, "Opo, ganun po. Ibabaril pa namin sa kanila."  —with a report by ABS-CBNnews.com
