If you hate the gym, you’re not alone. Even regular gym goers get tired of the same old faces, same old machines and same old workouts.

Whether you refuse to fork out hundreds of pounds for a membership or simply fancy a change of scenery, there are ways you can tone your body in time for summer, without going to the gym.

Try revamping your exercise regime with our top 6 fun fitness trends. Don’t worry; there isn’t a treadmill in sight!

Seen On Screen

For many, it feels like Zumba’s passed its sell by date. Don’t get us wrong, it’s great fun, but we’re ready to take it to the next level. Enter Seen On Screen. For all you self-confessed dancing divas out there, Seen On Screen takes your favourite music videos and brings them to life in your local gym studio. All those nights spent channelling your inner Beyoncé on the dance floor have finally paid off.

Bored of the same old classes, founder and former backing dancer, Bonnie Parsons decided to create workshops that emulated the moves of singing superstars; Beyoncé's ‘Crazy in Love’ and Britney Spears's ‘I'm a Slave 4 U’ providing the perfect examples.

If you’ve a passion for dancing, find out if there’s a Seen On Screen studio near you. It’s an amazing confidence boost for everyone of all ages and abilities.

Cardio Tennis

With Wimbledon just around the corner (kind of) what better way to practice your serve than with cardio tennis? Pushing your average on-court session to the limit; cardio tennis combines traditional tennis swings with more intense, heart-racing cardio movements, all to the beat of your favourite dance tunes.

It’s very different to what you’d catch on Murray Mound, but does the trick, with the ability to burn “600 calories an hour” says Virgin Active, who in recent years have launched several cardio tennis classes across the UK.

Clubbercise

Like Seen On Screen, Clubbercise is a dance fitness class that brings party fun to your local studio. But this time, things get serious. Picture darkened rooms, neon lights, glow sticks and lots of dancing. Founders of Clubbercise admit, they “all HATE the gym but LOVE to dance” and wanted to create a place where they could get fit without spending hours glued to a cross trainer.

Through a series of easy-to-follow aerobic exercises, Clubbercise encourages its members to dance like no one’s watching to great tracks. It’s easy to feel self-conscious at the gym, but there’s no chance of this at Clubbercise. Its organisers have done amazing things for charity too, and are strong advocates of Sport England’s #?ThisGirlCan campaign, “encouraging women to exercise without fear of judgment.” It’s lots of fun if you can’t face another dreary gym session.

Wild Fitness

If you prefer to venture off the beaten track, explore Wild Fitness. Across the globe, there are holidays and courses that focus on going back to basics; rejecting the gym environment, and instead, working with what Mother Nature gave us.

Tara Wood came up with the idea back in 2001. She was passionate about bringing out “natural human physical potential” and encouraging participants to re-engage with nature through “evolutionary fitness.” Against a backdrop of beaches, lush woodland and greenery in the likes of Zanzibar, Spain, Crete and the Isle of Wight, coaches get participants on their hands and knees for an intensive outdoors circuits session – lots of bear crawls, squats, bunny hops and of course, running.

But you don’t need to pay thousands to enjoy Wild Fitness. Dream up your own workout and get your “raw energy” fix by making the most of the great outdoors.

Bodyweight Training

Anyone on Instagram will agree, bodyweight training is immensely popular. Forget about bench press and bicep curls; both men and women are taking the cheaper route and sculpting their bodies through bodyweight training.

According to The Independent, “the American College of Sports and Medicine's worldwide survey of fitness trends for 2015 listed squats, lunges, push-ups, burpees and planks as the number 1 fitness trend for the coming year.”

Just because you’re not sweating it out in the gym doesn’t mean these exercises are easy – burpees in particular get the heart racing, fast! And the beauty of bodyweight training is that you can do it absolutely anywhere: the beach, the park, your living room. There are lots of great YouTube vids to choose from if you need a little guidance.

Gamified Fitness

It won’t come as a surprise to you that our ever-increasing love of technology has evolved so much, that even gaming is now a successful and well-established form of exercise. Forget the Wii Fit, we’re talking professional programmes and apps that enable you to accumulate points and smash ‘bonus rounds’ as you workout. Through expert training advice, you’re guided every step of the way; Fitocracy, Atari Fit and FitBit are great examples of this.

Gamifying your fitness regime can be fun. Rather than focusing on what others are doing and how you compare, by making it a game you create competition with yourself, which is a great way to improve.
