#Lovewins: 5 hidden honeymoon gems in Asia
« on: August 02, 2015, 06:17:38 AM »
It looks like there are going to be a lot more couples heading to far-flung corners of the globe for their honeymoon very soon! To celebrate diversity and love in all its forms this week, we wanted to showcase some great romantic destinations in Asia for couples who’ve been waiting to get married for a very long time. (Happily, you don’t have to be married to enjoy these destinations!)

What does Asia have to offer newlyweds? As it turns out, there’s a colourful variety of honeymoon hotspots to choose from, and these are just a few of the most delightful destinations!

1) Palawan, Philippines

Palawan Island in the Philippines has a mind-boggling number of beaches and resorts. You don’t have to be a marine wildlife enthusiast to appreciate the Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, like the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River. We just love the idea of kicking off your honeymoon with a river cruise while watching fireflies!

1a) El Nido

El Nido’s name seems to mark it as the perfect destination for lovebirds: it means “The Nest.” With over 45 islands and islets, newlyweds might very well feel like El Nido is their own private paradise. There’s plenty to do (apart from gazing into each other’s eyes), including snorkelling, diving, and trekking. Majestic limestone karst formations form a picturesque backdrop for honeymoon selfies, and there’s also the time-honoured tradition of  lolling around on the beach and partying after sundown at the popular Pukka bar, open till 3am.

1b) Huma Island

For a decadent honeymoon experience, you can’t go wrong with a private island.  Spend 5 wickedly luxurious days at Huma Island in breathtaking beach villas. If couples can bear to tear themselves away from the spa, they’ll find no shortage of things to do, from kayaking to hanging out with jewel-bright fish at coral reefs.

2) Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a vastly underrated honeymoon destination, which is perplexing because it has so much to offer. From the central highlands of Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, blanketed with the endless tea plantations, to the statuesque ruins of ancient kingdoms in Anuradhapura and the otherworldly beauty of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, there are so many amazing experiences in Sri Lanka that couples may very well want to extend their honeymoon! Remember to visit the breathtakingly pristine beach at Trincomalee; apart from the unspoilt beaches, there’s also the Pigeon Island National Park as well as dolphin and whale watching.

3) Luang Prabang, Laos

The numerous caves and waterfalls around Luang Prabang are so magical, you might just spot a unicorn. The tranquil vibe of Luang Prabang is partly due to its listing as UNESCO Heritage site: there are no buses or trucks allowed, and most people get around with motorcycles or bicycles. This French colonial riverside town is a real charmer, and a lot of that appeal lies in its mellowness, which helps you appreciate the rich variety of experiences in and around the city.

Explore the Pak Ou Caves and declare your love as you jump into the Kuang Si Waterfall, or wander through the Handicraft Night Market, which is open daily from 5.30 to 10pm (along Th Sisavangvong). This might just be the most laid-back street market in Asia, so if you want the extreme street market experience, you may have to yell at/ hard-sell products to yourself.

4) Hong Kong

Sometimes, you can take the newlyweds out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the newlyweds. For couples who need the buzz of a city like other people need espresso, Hong Kong’s labyrinthine streets are a great idea. For foodie or shopaholic couples, Hong Kong has every retail and gastronomic pleasure you could wish for, and a few that are so good they might bring you to tears. For a grand romantic gesture, a helicopter ride over the city and the bay is always a good idea (unless your partner is afraid of heights, of course). It’s said that the couple who shops together stays together. Well, it isn’t really said, but it’s a good way to keep track of your other half’s crazier purchases!

Have some madcap retail adventures with a shopping tour, which takes you out of the monolithic malls and into the street markets. When it’s time to refuel after all that shopping, join local foodies for a dim sum feast while you trade tales of travel. If you ask nicely, they might teach you some basic Cantonese phrases, the most important being: “Why is all the rum dim sum gone?”

5) Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai is a city where culture, history and adventure meet. (Sometimes, the three of them have parties when no-one’s looking). Explore the beauty of the landscape though nature trail treks, or spend half a day traipsing around Chiang Mai’s oldest temples. Stay with a hill tribe after couple of days trekking, which is an amazing opportunity to learn more about the Akha, Lahu and Karen tribes. Learn how to be a mahout, or just watch your partner try while you giggle at them. You’ll be put on an elephant at some point, but don’t let that worry you (unless the elephant starts talking to you – that would be a good time to start worrying). A honeymoon in Thailand isn’t complete without a traditional Thai massage, of course. Traditional Thai massages start at about 150 baht an hour (USD $6) from numerous small massage shops, but if you’re looking for a massage with all the bells and whistles in it, go for a spa experience instead. It’s true: nothing says “I love you” like the gift of exfoliation.
