Government keeping food, fuel prices stable

President Arroyo told business leaders yesterday that the government is
tempering the rise in food and fuel prices to stave off demands for wage
increases amid the global economic crisis.

Mrs. Arroyo said efforts to rein in the prices of food and fuel are the
government's contributions to private sector industries to keep them
competitive in the global market.

"We've been working hard to make sure food supplies remain stable
and to put food on the table for every Filipino in order to avoid
demands for a wage spiral and therefore keep you competitive, " Mrs.
Arroyo said in a speech during the Semiconductor and Electronics
Industries in the Philippines Inc. (SEIPI) chief executive officers'
forum in Malacañang.

"We have also been introducing measures to lift the burden of high fuel
prices of our people, so there will be no big transportation fare
increase for the workers who go to work, for the same reason, to avoid
demand for a wage spiral," she said.

Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila said Mrs. Arroyo's speech
did not constitute a definitive statement of policy regarding proposals
to raise the minimum wage to help workers keep up with rising prices.

Mrs. Arroyo has maintained preference for determining wage increases
through the tripartite regional wage boards over increasing wages
across-the-board through legislation by Congress.

"What she said about the wage spiral, it has something to do with the
cost of goods. There's no statement to the effect of whether there
is a wage adjustment or not. Let's not put any undue interpretation
to what the President said," Favila said.
