Are Filipino values good or bad.?
« on: October 21, 2008, 01:30:56 AM »
Maraming kaugalian nating mga pinoy na nakasanayan na in dealing with day-to-day life na para sa atin  ay normal lang pero hindi pa rin maintindihan kung eto nga ba ay  kabuktutan or nakakatulong sa kaunlaran? Obviously these values can be used in a good or evil context.

Pinoy Hospitality - gagawin ang lahat masiyahan lang ang bisita. Sa probinsya, ihahanda ang manok, de latang corned beef para sa bisita habang sila ay nagtyaga sa tuyo. The guest can use the best bedroom while ang ang pamilya nagtyaga sa salas sa sahig, at ipaglalaba pa ang bisita.

Utang na Loob -

Hiya

Pagkamahinhin

Bahala na (ganyan talaga ang buhay)

Palakasan

Bayanihan
Pagdadamayan

at iba pa...

Ganito kami noon, paano kayo ngayon?  Paano natin malalaman ang tamang direksyon Filipino values ought to move or become?

Why the word "Filipino"? Aren't they also found in other nationalities? ??? Can be good or bad depending on whether they're being used or being abused. :) ;)

One interesting Fil culture is "tampo". When applied excessively, the term is "tampururot".
Tampo, in Philippine culture, refers to a range of behavior in which a person withdraws his or her affection or cheerfulness from a person who has hurt his or her feelings.
The term has no precise equivalent in English, though "sulking" or "to sulk" is often considered the closest translation.

Cultural context
While the external manifestations may indeed sound like "sulking" in the western sense, the underlying cultural reason for them is what sets tampo apart. While sulking has strong negative connotations in western countries, tampo is quite acceptable among Filipinos. In fact, tampo has positive connotations for the Filipino, quite aside from the obvious negative ones.
As a cultural behavior, tampo springs from the nonconfrontational nature of Philippine social interaction. Tampo offers an acceptable means of expressing hurt feelings in a society in which direct expression of anger or resentment is discouraged. The withdrawal behaviors of tampo are indirect ways of expressing hostility. Tampo may also be seen as a means by which Filipinos "save face", as direct confrontation is usually a threat to the "smooth interpersonal relationships" (SIR) deeply valued in Philippine society
.

Tampururot: a humorous variant of the word, "tampo"; when used as a verb, it refers to uncalled-for or excessive tampo; used as a noun to refer to a person, it indicates that that person employs tampo too easily. :) ;)
Why interesting? Look what happened when skipper, Dawg and me got into pissing contest with skipper’s friends. As Boom pointed it out,
wla nay peace bro..giyera na
We’re no longer Pinoys. We’re o/s Pinoys. Mga “exiles”. Hehehe. ;) Consequently, for survival, we have to adapt a diff culture – the o/s Pinoy culture. Whenever we visit home, we have to be careful with shadows lurking behind us. Tingalig ma-pagan.
Yes, skipper. Wala nay SIR.
 ;D  ;)
