A FAMILY TRAGEDY, A NATIONS AGONY
The events that have unfolded before us in the past few days, in full view of the
entire nation, the sorrow and sadness of a family living out a tragedy is reflecting
the fiber of todays society.
The nation stood still as we watched the tragic news of a mother of two daughters
and a wife of a popular media personality succumb to the pressures of society.  In
this background we saw the inhumane treatment of the police authorities on the
bereaved family.  We share in the sorrow of a man who lost a wife, who must now
protect his family.  Imagine the helplessness and agony of watching your relatives
being arrested and jailed in complete disregard of accepted rules of governance.
This case is a mirror of our society, the subjective interpretation of our laws and
the grave abuse of authority should not be allowed to continue.  The essence of our
laws to protect the rights of each and every individual citizen against abuse and
tyranny was ripped apart with each Filipino as a spectator.  The oppression of the
government on it’s own people is very relevant in this feudalistic democracy where
power flows from the barrel of a gun.  We have police authorities acting like war
lords with a mask of legality.
Do we want to live in a democracy where in each citizen is treated fairly and justly
regardless of social standing, with each person enjoying the dignity and equal
rights of a human being.  Where the voice of a nations’ opinion can be voiced out
and be heard without retribution?
I fear for my country, I fear for what our society is becoming, I fear for the
future of my family.  I realize that we cannot change the nation over night. We can
change ourselves, we can stand up for justice and equality.  How is it that we have
officials living in unexplained wealth and governing with impunity?  When did
politics become synonymous with business opportunity?
Will we allow our authorities to arrest grieving family members without warrants,
are we living in a world where our rules and regulations are subjective in nature?
Pray for Trina, do not forget the struggle of Ted.  This is a story of man standing
strong and facing the consequences of his actions as the voice of the masses.  Let
this tragedy that had befallen the Failons be a reminder for all of us, that each
one of us has an important role in life be it a father, a husband, at work, in faith
and in our community.  If this can happen to Ted, pray that we will never be in his
situation.
