Wesley So scores first win in Corus BABS-CBN - Sunday, January 24MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino chess Grandmaster Wesley So turned back Romanian GM Liviu Dieter Nisipeanu in the 6th Round for his first win in the 72nd Corus international chess championship group B at the De Moriaan Community Centre in Wijk Aan Zee, Netherlands.
So created a two-way tie for third place on Friday (Saturday in Manila) by defeating Nisipeanu, the second highest-rated player in the field, using the disadvantageous black pieces in 35 moves of Reti Opening.
“GM Wes (Wesley So) played solid and accurate against GM Liviu (Liviu Dieter Nisipeanu). In fact, he was a pawn up after 17 moves,” said his trainer National Master Roberto Suelo Jr., 1996 Philippine Junior champion.
Suelo said So used his knights and rook with precision and capitalized on his opponent's time trouble.
The 16-year-old So, whose stint in the Netherlands is being supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines president Prospero “Butch” Pichay, Jr. and Filway Marketing Inc. CEO Hector “Chito” Tagaysay, is now tied for 3rd to 4th spots with England's GM David Howell for a total of 3.5 points.
Dutch GM Anish Giri still leads the field with 5 points after winning anew against Finnish GM Tomi Nyback. In second spot is GM Erwin l' Ami who also won against Indian GM Parimarjan Negi to notch 4 points. – by Marlon Bernardino
