Buying Websites - What You Should Know

Buying websites isn't about quantity but quality. Although having several quality websites is only good for business, having a domain that does well already or has the potential to do well is more helpful from a business standpoint. When domain names are sold through a broker or registry, many times an established business is attached to such a name. In this case, both the price of a generic keyword name and the revenue behind a business are incorporated into the price for a domain. Domain names you create yourself, however, may cost less but, if you're looking to invest in an online business, an established one won't need to go through the amount of marketing that a new website will need.

The benefits of owning an internet business include being able to work in various locations and at all times. Additionally, if the site has a shopping cart, sales can be made at all times - not just when you're open for business. But, such perks often come with a business that has been established. New online stores, on the other hand, take several months - if not a few years - to see any type of profit. In many cases, those selling online stores started their business several years as a hobby to generate a small amount of additional income. The website wasn't a full-time job originally but became one over a few years. In the case of buying websites, instances like this are nearly identical to transferring ownership of a business from one individual to another.

In the case you want to start a business from scratch by buying websites, generic or keyword-focused domains ending in dot-com are friendlier to the search engines. SEO techniques involve incorporating keywords in all aspects of a website, although not to the point of saturation, and this involves the domain and any URL extensions. Essentially, a website that doesn't have a keyword-focused domain will have a harder time getting top ranks on the major search engines, while a domain that is short, simple, and focused on a keyword will show better ranks quickly once various internet marketing techniques are applied.

Of course, during the process of buying websites, many find that premium, generic term domains cost significantly more than those they make. Although in some instances an established website is attached to a generic term, the more keyword-centric and short a domain is, the higher the value.
