There is always a chance that your dog may develop an allergy to the food you feed him, even if they haven't shown any signs of it in the rest of their life. Dog food allergies are about as common as food allergies in humans. However, dogs are more prone to allergies than humans because things that dogs are commonly allergic to are common ingredients in the foods we feed them. If your dog does get a food allergy you will have find out exactly which ingredient caused the food allergy so you cwill known which foods to avoid.
There are only a few different foods that dogs are commonly allergic to. These are foods like dairy products, beef, eggs, grains, corn, pork, lamb, and fish. If you suspect that your dog may have an allergy you need to take them off of a food with these ingredients immediately.
There are many different symptoms that may effect a dog who is suffering from allergies to dog food. These can change depending on the dog and the specific food they are allergic to. Many of the symptoms are also common to other allergies and conditions. Symptoms include, itchiness, unusual discharges from the nose or eyes, loss of appetite, vomiting, coughing, sneezing, difficulty breathing, and hair loss. Loss of appetite and vomiting are also common to food intolerance, which is different from an allergy. For example I have an intolerance to Chinese food but am not allergic to anything they cook with, it simply doesn't agree with me. It can be the same way for your dog. Coughing, sneezing, itching and hair loss are also symptoms of a inhalant allergy. Which is an allergy caused by pollens from certain plants. Unlike inhalant allergies though the dog will have symptoms year round rather than seasonally if it is a food allergy.
