WIMBLEDON, England (AP)—Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero has lost in five sets to Xavier Malisse of Belgium in the first round at Wimbledon.
Former top-ranked Ferrero, seeded 14th, broke in the opening game of the decider but surrendered the last five games of the match to hand Malisse victory 6-2, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1.
Malisse, ranked 63rd in the world, made the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2002.
The 2003 French Open winner, Ferrero is one of six Grand Slam champions in the draw. This is the first time that he has lost in the opening round at the All England Club.
